Why is the North cold even though it's summer?

Amidst the scorching heat, the North is about to welcome a cold front from the North - a rare but not unusual phenomenon in the summer.

This is a weak, unseasonal northeast monsoon that can cause thunderstorms and a marked drop in temperature.

On the morning of May 9, the National Center for Hydro-Meteorological Forecasting continued to warn that the cold air mass was still moving south. It is expected that around May 10, the cold air will first affect the mountainous areas of the Northeast.

By the evening and night of May 10, the cold air will be strengthened, expanding its influence to the entire Northeast, North Central, Northwest and part of the Central Central region in the following days.

Under the impact of this cold air mass, temperatures in the North and North Central regions will decrease from the night of May 10.

The weather is noticeably cooler (the lowest temperature is commonly 20-23 degrees Celsius), especially in mountainous areas, the lowest temperature can drop below 18 degrees Celsius. The wind on land changes to the Northeast at level 2-3 (stronger in coastal areas, level 3-4).

Along with the cold air is widespread thunderstorms. From the night of May 9 to May 11, the North and North Central regions will have moderate to heavy rain, and in some places very heavy rain.

From the afternoon of May 10, rain will spread to the Central Central region, with some areas experiencing heavy rain. Phenomena such as tornadoes, lightning, hail and strong gusts of wind may also occur, affecting crops, livestock and traffic, especially in mountainous areas.

According to representatives of the National Center for Hydro-Meteorological Forecasting and weather experts, this is an unseasonal cold spell but not too rare in Vietnam.

Cold air is often associated with fluctuations in cold air masses in mainland China, pushing southward due to unusual changes in monsoon structure and upper-level circulation.

A weather expert shared that when it comes to cold air, many people often think of cold, thinking that whenever there is cold air, the weather will be cold, but in fact that is not the case. Cold air still exists all year round, but it is not always strong enough to affect the mainland of our country.
