Vietnam joins hands to build a peaceful world

Pleased to meet UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres again in Hanoi after more than a year, General Secretary To Lam expressed his appreciation for the sentiments and valuable support of the United Nations as well as the Secretary-General himself, a sincere and loyal friend who has always accompanied and supported Vietnam since joining the United Nations in 1977.

Affirming strong support for multilateralism with the United Nations playing a central role, the General Secretary emphasized that Vietnam is well aware of its responsibilities and is ready to participate in solving global issues such as maintaining peace , handling conflicts, promoting development, ensuring human rights, responding to climate change, etc. With a deep understanding of the value of peace, Vietnam supports the settlement of disputes and conflicts by peaceful means, in accordance with the United Nations Charter and international law.

The General Secretary asked the Secretary General to support Vietnam in participating more deeply in this field, especially in participating in UN peacekeeping activities in the context of unpredictable conflicts in the world.

Affirming that people are at the center of all policies, the General Secretary emphasized that Vietnam prioritizes stable, sustainable, long-term development, application of science, technology, innovation, digital transformation, environmental protection, and is ready to share experiences and support other countries in economic development, agriculture, health care, education, etc.

Thanking the United Nations and countries for their trust and support in Vietnam's membership of the Human Rights Council for two consecutive terms, the General Secretary said this is the clearest proof of Vietnam's commitments and achievements in ensuring the rights and interests of the people.

UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres shared special feelings every time he visited Vietnam, associated with memories of the past struggle to support Vietnam, expressing special admiration for the heroic struggle of the Vietnamese people for independence and unification. Overcoming all difficulties and challenges of war, blockade and embargo, Vietnam has achieved spectacular and outstanding achievements not only in economic growth but also seriously implemented commitments on climate change response, playing an important role, voice and contribution in all three pillars of the United Nations' activities.

Considering that Vietnam is a fundamental pillar of South-South cooperation and of a balanced, stable multipolar world order based on international law, the Secretary-General hopes that Vietnam will strongly support balanced reform of the United Nations, maintain development assistance activities, especially for developing countries, and oppose unilateral actions.

On international and regional issues, the two sides agreed on the need to strengthen solidarity, promote dialogue and cooperation to prevent conflicts, resolve disputes by peaceful means, on the basis of the United Nations Charter and international law, in which the role of regional organizations, especially ASEAN, and ASEAN-UN cooperation, in which the UN can refer to ASEAN's experience in dynamic economic development, maintaining peace and promoting consensus, should be promoted.

General Secretary To Lam shared and highly appreciated the good opinions and sentiments of Secretary-General Antonio Guterres and affirmed that Vietnam is ready to join hands with the United Nations and the international community to build a world of peace, stability, fairness and sustainable development.
