Vietnam strives to achieve the goal of reducing greenhouse gas emissions.

On October 28, in Ho Chi Minh City, the Department of Climate Change (Ministry of Agriculture and Environment) organized a "Conference to disseminate knowledge on climate change response and roadmap to achieve carbon neutrality goals according to commitments at the COP26 Conference".

The representative of the Department of Climate Change said that Vietnam has implemented many programs and projects to adapt to climate change and has achieved specific results in improving the resilience and adaptive capacity of natural, economic and social systems, including: responding to natural disasters, preventing flooding in large cities, strengthening river and sea dykes and reservoir safety; building communities that effectively adapt to climate change; protecting and sustainably developing forests and conserving biodiversity; ensuring food security; ensuring water security, etc.

According to survey data of the Department of Climate Change in 2024, Vietnam has 1,107 climate change adaptation models based on nature, ecosystems and communities, of which: 285 climate change adaptation models based on nature; 62 climate change adaptation models based on ecosystems; 760 climate change adaptation models based on communities.

In particular, the high-quality, low-emission rice farming model in the Mekong Delta has brought about clear benefits both economically and environmentally, contributing to reducing production costs from 8.2% to 24.2%. Profits increased from 4-7.6 million VND/ha compared to traditional farming.

From a business perspective, a representative of Suntory Company, Pepsico Vietnam said that the company has also implemented many solutions to reduce greenhouse gases. For example, the project to convert fossil fuels to biomass, the project helps reduce greenhouse gas emissions by about 35,000 tons of CO₂/year. The rooftop solar power project, the rooftop solar power capacity is estimated at nearly 29,000 MWh/year, contributing to reducing about 19,000 tons of CO₂/year... The company recommends that the Government study and recognize the use of biomass as one of the measures to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and CO2 emissions from biomass are not included in the total greenhouse gas emissions at the facility.

The representative of the Department of Climate Change added that Vietnam has also received many international sources of support for climate change adaptation, for example, the Global Environment Fund: Since 1998, Vietnam has received 21 national projects (101 million USD) and 24 regional projects (185 million USD) for environmental and climate change projects. Green Climate Fund: Vietnam has received funding for 6 projects including climate change adaptation and greenhouse gas emission reduction with a total support budget of 210 million USD; Adaptation Fund: Vietnam has mobilized 18.244 million USD and is being considered for funding of 71.467 million USD.

Ms. Mai Kim Lien, Deputy Director of the Department of Climate Change, Ministry of Agriculture and Environment, said that Vietnam has participated in many international initiatives to implement solutions to adapt to climate change such as: Commitment to reduce global methane emissions; Glasgow Declaration on forests and land use; Global Declaration on converting coal power to clean energy. These commitments not only affirm Vietnam as a responsible member of the international community but also open up many cooperation opportunities to attract financial and technological resources for climate change response.

According to Ms. Mai Kim Lien, the path to the goal of net zero emissions by 2050 is not easy. Vietnam is also facing challenges and difficulties such as: large investment capital requirements, limited technology, management capacity needs to continue to improve, while awareness and action of the social community are not yet synchronized. Therefore, implementing the commitment requires the accompaniment and cooperation of the entire political system, each citizen and the whole society.

According to the Ministry of Agriculture and Environment, Vietnam's carbon credit market has also achieved many positive results: Accordingly, for the Clean Development Mechanism (CDM), the number of registered projects is 258; the number of registered programs is 13; the number of projects granted credits is 77; the number of programs granted credits is 03; the number of credits granted is 25,670,728. For the Joint Crediting Mechanism (JCM), the number of registered projects is 48; the number of credits granted is 817,247.
