"To be committed to the medical profession, doctors need to remember six things: honesty, diligent lifelong learning, upholding and spreading medical ethics, proficiency in foreign languages and technology, actively maintaining physical and mental health, and responsibility to the community."
These were the words of Professor Le Ngoc Thanh, Rector of the University of Medicine and Pharmacy, Vietnam National University, Hanoi (VNU - UMP), to students and young doctors at the closing ceremony of the 2024-2025 academic year and the awarding of diplomas to 349 full-time undergraduate students, held on July 30th.
Honesty and lifelong learning are essential values that every young doctor should uphold as they dedicate themselves to this profession.

At the ceremony, the school also awarded diplomas to 35 master's graduates and 2 resident doctors from the first cohort, specializing in oncology and surgery.
Regarding the reason why honesty is the primary requirement for doctors, Professor Thanh once shared: "Just one instance of dishonesty can have unpredictable consequences, especially for surgeons. Because with patients, doctors must constantly monitor their health before and after surgery. If they haven't examined or closely monitored the patient but still report to their supervisor that they have, the patient might die without the doctor knowing."
The VNU president also stated that the medical profession requires lifelong learning. And today, doctors must also be proficient in foreign languages, proficient in information technology, and simultaneously cultivate their physical fitness and nurture their minds.
Master's degree training for international students
Professor Le Ngoc Thanh added that at VNU, lecturers are also required to have foreign language proficiency, and there are regulations regarding lectures delivered in English.
The university has also diversified its training programs, creating an ecosystem that supports lifelong learning for doctors. VNU has expanded its international cooperation in training high-quality human resources, including collaborations with the University of Medicine and Pharmacy and the Paris Public Hospitals (AP-HP) system. AP-HP, with 38 public hospitals, 6 complexes, and nearly 100,000 employees, receives approximately 8 million patients annually, making it not only the largest network in France but also the largest in Europe. Many talented VNU students have had the opportunity to study at AP-HP.
VNU has also officially launched additional master's degree programs in English for international students starting in 2025, with four programs: internal medicine, surgery, pediatrics, and radiology and nuclear medicine. The programs are built to international accreditation standards and taught entirely in English.
Currently, VNU has established practical training partnerships with a network of nearly 30 central and Hanoi-based hospitals, which serve as training facilities ensuring the quality of clinical practice for undergraduate and postgraduate students.
