On March 2, Dr. Tra Anh Duy, a specialist at Men's Health Center (HCMC), said that recently, the center has received many cases of men who are tall and muscular, but when they check their reproductive health, they find that their sperm is very low, weak, deformed, or even has no sperm due to the abuse of weight loss drugs and skin tightening drugs.
Typically, Mr. TBT (24 years old, in Ho Chi Minh City) is a fitness trainer (PT) and his wife came for a premarital fertility check to prepare for marriage. Although his body is very well-proportioned, beautiful and muscular, when he went to the center for a semen analysis, there was no sperm.
Dr. Duy provides premarital counseling to a couple.
Taking his medical history, he said that due to his occupation, he had been injecting anabolic steroids (exogenous male hormones) for a long time, combined with regular exercise and a high-protein diet, which would help increase protein synthesis, thereby promoting rapid growth and strength of skeletal muscles. However, the side effect of this was to inhibit sperm production in the testicles, causing male infertility.
Similarly, Mr. MAQ (28 years old, in Ba Ria-Vung Tau) works in the fashion industry so he is also conscious of "keeping fit" to always be in shape and have a beautiful appearance, but when checking the quality of his sperm, he also fell into the ironic situation of having severe oligospermia. That is, all sperm indicators including quantity, mobility and shape are abnormal. This is the cause of male infertility. Through a survey of his habits, it was found that he has been using drugs and cosmetics for a long time to help tighten the skin, especially daily anti-baldness drugs.
Sperm quality is reduced due to abuse of beauty products
Doctor Duy said that gentlemen today always want to maintain their elegant style with weight loss drugs, skin tightening drugs, muscle building drugs, anti-baldness drugs... These methods can help men become more attractive in appearance but have the potential risk of reduced fertility because it works based on the mechanism of "tricking" the pituitary gland in the brain into thinking that the testicles are overactive. Causing the pituitary gland to stop producing two important hormones that promote sperm production, FSH and LH. Men who abuse these drugs can reduce the quality and quantity of sperm, even completely inactivating the testicles, leading to no sperm.
Doctor Duy recommends that when using any product related to appearance, men should carefully study the side effects and avoid long-term abuse. It is best to consult a specialist and monitor your health while using the product. In case you see little semen, thin semen, abnormal semen color or slow to conceive, you should go to a reputable medical facility for immediate examination.
