Today, eKYC (electronic identity verification) solutions are becoming more convenient and secure thanks to the application of advanced technologies such as artificial intelligence (AI), big data, and blockchain, which enhance data processing capabilities, especially in combating impersonation and identity theft.
Preventing identity theft
Recently, when installing the VNeID application for electronic citizen identification, the application scans real facial images along with identification documents. This "deep" verification process aims to ensure the functionality of VNeID and its value as a replacement for traditional identification documents in transactions.
When entering an office or facility, visitors or employees simply stand in front of a camera for facial recognition verification against a database. eKYC (Electronic Kyrgyz Signature) is a more rigorous and accurate way to manage personnel than card scanning. Video call verification has significantly helped financial institutions prevent certain forms of identity theft that can bypass eKYC, such as deepfake and spoofing. This method also allows for remote verification via internet connection. However, in its early stages, video call verification still relies heavily on manual labor, requiring direct employee involvement.
Banks are among the first sectors to successfully apply eKYC authentication in electronic transactions, bringing benefits and convenience to both parties, ensuring greater security in operations and providing customers with faster and more convenient service. By the end of 2022, 40 banks in Vietnam had officially implemented the eKYC payment account opening process, with over 11.9 million active accounts. Currently, customers can open a bank account completely online remotely. With video call eKYC, banks will verify customer personal information 100% online through a video call. Even online withdrawals and transfers are verified via video call eKYC, and after verifying identification documents and checking the authenticity of images, staff will assist customers in completing their requests.
Vietnam Post and Telecommunications Group ( VNPT ) has developed the VNPT eKYC electronic identification solution for application in the digital transformation of the Vietnamese economy. For the public sector, eKYC can be applied to improve administrative procedures, reduce waiting times, and enhance service quality in government public services, as well as in healthcare, insurance, and education. For economic sectors, primarily banking, fintech, insurance, and tourism, eKYC helps verify customers, enhance identification, and expand service scopes through supporting solutions and tools such as online banking and finance applications, mobile applications, and self-service kiosks.

Vietnam has mastered the technology.
Vietnam is currently accelerating the implementation of a comprehensive national digital transformation aimed at building a digital government, digital economy, and digital society. Transactions and administrative procedures must be conducted entirely online.
In mid-March, the Ho Chi Minh City People's Committee issued a plan to implement the "Digital Transformation Program of Ho Chi Minh City" and the "Building Ho Chi Minh City into a Smart City" project by 2024. This plan includes the goal of 100% of administrative procedures meeting the requirements for full-process online public service delivery being provided on the city's administrative procedure information system, connected to the National Public Service Portal. Vietnam has strengths in leveraging AI, so currently almost all eKYC solutions, especially from large technology companies, utilize AI. FPT's FPT AI eKYC, with its identification time of only a few seconds, saves time and costs, maximizes resources, minimizes errors, and meets high operational and security requirements.
With the support of advanced technology, organizations no longer need to employ staff for certain tasks. For example, ACB Bank's ACB Lite automated banking model operates 24/7, allowing customers to perform transactions such as deposits, withdrawals, opening payment accounts, and quickly issuing Visa Debit cards anytime, all completely digitized. Based on a collaboration with TrueID, a "Make-in-Vietnam" eKYC solution developed by VNG, ACB Bank has implemented the eKYC Video Call Face Identity feature, enabling customers to increase their transaction limit to 500 million VND per transaction after identity verification via video call. In contrast, with eKYC based on personal identification documents, customers can only open cards with a maximum transaction limit of 100 million VND per day.
The application of next-generation eKYC has many advantages due to the existing legal framework and the fact that the technology has been mastered by Vietnamese people, with numerous eKYC applications from large corporations and companies such as VNPT, Viettel, FPT, CMC, VNG, etc.
The national population database is the foundation.
In particular, since February 2021, Vietnam has been operating the National Population Database System, and from December 19, 2022, information has been shared with the national population database system across various sectors. Alongside this is the implementation of electronic citizen identification, which by mid-2023 had issued identification accounts to over 44 million citizens nationwide. This forms the foundation upon which eKYC solutions, when connected, can enhance security and accuracy.
