Construction of road connecting Gia Binh airport with Hanoi in maximum 2 years

(Chinhphu.vn) - On the evening of February 23, at the Government headquarters, Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh chaired a meeting with relevant ministries, branches and localities on the progress of phase 1 implementation, research and implementation of phase 2 of the Gia Binh airport project (Bac Ninh), construction of a connecting road between the airport and the center of Hanoi and development of a logistics center at this airport.

Also attending the meeting were Comrade Bui Thi Minh Hoai, Politburo member, Secretary of the Hanoi Party Committee; Party Central Committee members: Deputy Prime Minister Tran Hong Ha, Minister of Transport Tran Hong Minh, Minister, Head of the Government Office Tran Van Son, Chairman of the Hanoi People's Committee Tran Sy Thanh, Secretary of the Bac Ninh Provincial Party Committee Nguyen Anh Tuan; leaders of ministries, branches and localities.

Previously, at the groundbreaking ceremony of Gia Binh airport phase 1 in December 2024, the Prime Minister requested agencies to research and deploy the connecting road between Gia Binh airport and Hanoi capital, and must have a plan for this route by June 2025 at the latest.

With the goal of building a multi-purpose, dual-use airport with specialized airport functions equivalent to level 4E, Gia Binh airport is a national key project, playing a particularly important role in the system of national defense and security projects.

When completed, the airport will serve the training and combat readiness missions of the People's Public Security Air Force, reserve for flight operations of the Air Defense - Air Force Service (Ministry of National Defense), reserve for airports and airfields in the region in case of emergency; orient to ensure the operation of special flights serving Party and State leaders, international politicians on large fixed-wing aircraft; and transport goods and passengers when required and qualified.

After representatives of the Ministry of Public Security, Ministry of Transport, Hanoi City, Bac Ninh Province and delegates reported, discussed and spoke at the meeting, Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh stated that the Southeast and the Red River Delta are the growth drivers, Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City are the growth poles of the whole country.

The Southeast region is building Long Thanh airport at a very urgent pace, and traffic projects connecting Long Thanh airport with Tan Son Nhat airport are also being promoted, thereby solving an important step in the traffic problem in Ho Chi Minh City in particular and the Southeast in general.

In the North, the dynamic regions and growth poles are located in the Red River Delta. Of which, Hanoi currently has only one large airport, Noi Bai, which has recently started construction on an additional terminal, but with the current growth rate, it is still overloaded. Therefore, the requirement is to have another dual-use airport that serves both national security and socio-economic development, reducing the load on Noi Bai airport.

The Prime Minister stated that the planning and construction of Gia Binh airport, an international-class, level 4E airport, has a clear practical, political and legal basis; the first phase has just started. The Prime Minister requested that phase 2 be researched and implemented immediately while phase 1 is being built, and done while "everything is ready" to save time, effort and resources, and prevent waste.

Along with that, the Prime Minister emphasized the need to study the route, connection plan, and build the fastest, most direct, most beautiful, and most effective route connecting Gia Binh airport with the center of Hanoi. Requesting to complete this route within 2 years at the most, the Prime Minister pointed out that this is also an important project to promote the country's image to international friends and partners, call for investment, and attract tourism.

In addition, the Prime Minister also directed the construction and development of a logistics center at the airport in a modern, smart direction, and the development of e-commerce.

The Prime Minister stated that all of the above-mentioned tasks must be done quickly, promptly, effectively, and at the lowest cost. There are some contents that need to be taken as shortcuts. What the law allows must be implemented in accordance with regulations. At the same time, research and propose to add some special and specific mechanisms. The authority of each level must be decided by that level; the spirit is to do it quickly but ensure quality, safety, ensure a bright, green, clean, and beautiful environment, and achieve the goals set out under the direction of General Secretary To Lam.
