The crew of a Togo-flagged cargo ship was evacuated on the morning of September 20 after an explosion occurred near the port of Sulina, Romania.
The ship encountered an accident while en route to one of Ukraine's ports on the Danube River.
The Seama reported detecting an explosion on the morning of September 20 and requested to evacuate 12 crew members near the port of Sulina, where the Danube River flows into the Black Sea.
The crew was assisted in evacuation by Romanian authorities.
Romanian Transport Minister Sorin Grindeanu said it was not yet clear whether the explosion was caused by a mine or simply an explosion in the engine compartment.
The Romanian Ministry of Defense announced that the country's Navy has deployed an underwater minesweeper and divers to the port of Sulina to participate in the investigation of the incident.
Romania is a member of the European Union (EU) and the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) and shares a 650km-long border with Ukraine.
The Black Sea is an important shipping route for grain, oil and petrochemical products to many countries in the region including Bulgaria, Romania, Georgia, Türkiye, Ukraine and Russia./.
