Since the Thanh Nien Newspaper published its first issue on June 21, 1925 under the direction of leader Nguyen Ai Quoc, the country's revolutionary press has continuously grown and matured. Throughout that journey, the press has always stood side by side with the history of the national revolution, becoming a "sharp weapon on the ideological front" of the Party and the People. The revolutionary press plays a pioneering role in truthfully reflecting the reality of life, orienting public opinion and encouraging the revolutionary movement.

Journalism in the resistance war against France

Immediately after the August Revolution in 1945, the revolutionary press was assigned by the Party and the Government to propagate the guidelines and policies and mobilize the people to participate in building and protecting the new government. The Vietnam Independence Newspaper (the predecessor of Nhan Dan Newspaper), born in September 1945, called on the people to unite and prepare for resistance. Along with that, many important newspapers and magazines such as Cuu Quoc, Co Giai Phong, Tap Chi Cong San were born one after another, quickly conveying the Party's national salvation guidelines to all classes of people.

During the resistance war against the French, the revolutionary press operated with two goals: both to convey information and to promote fighting spirit. The pages of the newspaper promptly propagated the Party's military and people's policies, reflecting the victories and sacrifices of soldiers and compatriots in the resistance war. Despite the harsh war conditions and harsh colonial prohibitions, the revolutionary press still existed thanks to the network of printing and secret news transportation. Many articles and literature praised the desire for independence, encouraging the determination to fight and win of the army and people of the whole country. The press during this period was both an important information channel and a sharp propaganda tool, contributing to leading the people to the final victory of the resistance war against the French colonialists.

Journalism in the resistance war against America

During the resistance war against the US to save the country (1954-1975), the revolutionary press continued to promote its role as the leading shock force on the ideological front. In the North, central press agencies such as Nhan Dan, Quan Doi Dan, local newspapers, along with the Voice of Vietnam , National Television... reported on the large rear area of the North that was steadfast in production, while condemning the crimes of the US imperialists and their puppet government. The Northern press tried its best to encourage a new life in the rear area and called on the people of the South to fight together. In the South, despite operating secretly under the control of the puppet government, the revolutionary press still quietly propagated the liberation line, broadcast anonymously, and roneo-printed (manual copying) revolutionary documents to send to the liberated areas.

During this period, the press not only quickly reflected military events but also deeply portrayed the heroic and indomitable spirit of the people and soldiers. Images of resounding victories in major battles, revolutionary songs, and the slogan “Nothing is more precious than independence and freedom” were widely spread through newspapers and radio. Thanh Hoa’s press became a sharp spiritual weapon encouraging the army and people of Thanh Hoa to fight steadfastly. Hundreds of reporters and press collaborators from localities also went to each village and trench to record news of the resistance war, making an important contribution to the victory of the revolution nationwide.

Journalism in the process of construction and innovation

After the country was reunified, the Vietnamese revolutionary press continued to play an important role in the period of peace and socialist construction. The press has always been a bridge between the Party, the State and the People, promptly informing major policies on economic reform, new rural construction, cultural development, education, etc. throughout the country. During the renovation period (since 1986), the press developed rapidly in both quantity and quality. Many new press agencies were established, the number of journalists increased rapidly. The press in the North and the South converged and expanded their networks; printed newspapers, radio, television, and online newspapers developed diversely. The revolutionary press has become a forum for people and officials to reflect their opinions and contribute to Party building and social management. Many highly appreciated investigative articles and reports have contributed to discovering shortcomings in management, thereby urging competent agencies to adjust policies and improve the effectiveness of State management.

Journalism in the era of integration and digital transformation

Entering the 21st century, Vietnamese press witnessed a profound information technology revolution.

The Internet, social media and smart devices have diversified the way news is reported. Many press agencies have proactively published both paper and electronic versions, and used social media platforms to expand their influence. In localities, the press also reaches readers through fanpages, online television, video clips, and creates online forums for the public to participate in discussions and reflect on hot social issues.

At the same time, global integration and digital transformation pose great challenges to the press in terms of information quality and reliability. The battle on the information front has become more intense as a lot of false information and fake news have appeared. Therefore, the role of the press in guiding public opinion has been increasingly emphasized. Key editorial offices have increased information verification and strictly handled professional violations to maintain their reputation. Revolutionary press has also actively fought against wrong views and distortions of the Party's policies, contributing to maintaining people's trust. The application of new technologies (electronic newspapers, mobile applications, online television) has helped the Vietnamese press integrate deeply, quickly bring information to readers, serving the common development of society.

The role of Thanh revolutionary press

The revolutionary press in Thanh Hoa has always been closely linked to the development of the homeland. During the resistance war, the Thanh Hoa press was considered a sharp spiritual weapon to encourage the army and people of Thanh Hoa to fight steadfastly. Today, the local press constantly innovates its content and methods, promptly reflects the people's lives, propagates the Party's guidelines and policies, and spreads a deep patriotism. The Thanh Hoa press always contributes to arousing the spirit of solidarity and encouraging the community to join hands in building the homeland.

Thus, over the past century, the Vietnamese revolutionary press has proven its indispensable role in the nation's development journey. On all ideological fronts, the press is the vanguard on the Party's ideological front, honestly reflecting the reality of life, orienting public opinion, promoting patriotic movements and protecting the Party's ideological foundation. Today, the Vietnamese press continues to innovate its content and methods of operation, striving to provide accurate and timely information. The past 100-year journey has affirmed the strength of the revolutionary press in accompanying the country. On the road ahead, the Vietnamese press will continue to promote its glorious tradition, accompanying the people to build and protect an increasingly rich and civilized Fatherland.
