According to Master's degree holder Le Hong Thinh, head of the laboratory department at Can Tho City Obstetrics and Gynecology Hospital, the hospital receives approximately 33,000 pregnant women for prenatal check-ups each year, of which 49% come from provinces in the region. Implementing prenatal and neonatal screening and diagnosis is crucial and part of the strategy to improve the quality of the population.
Mr. Le Thanh Dung, Director of the Population Department, emphasized that the Ministry of Health is very interested in the prenatal and newborn screening program.
The goal is to screen for, detect, and intervene early in fetal abnormalities and malformations through prenatal screening, and to detect and treat early in genetic metabolic diseases through newborn screening.
According to the Center for Prenatal and Neonatal Screening and Diagnosis at Can Tho City Obstetrics and Gynecology Hospital, prenatal and neonatal screening is currently developing strongly. At Can Tho City Obstetrics and Gynecology Hospital alone, the prenatal screening rate among pregnant women reaches 97%, while in 12 provinces in the region, this rate is approximately 50% among pregnant women who come for examination.
Regarding newborn screening, 100% of newborns at Can Tho City Obstetrics and Gynecology Hospital receive complete screening, while in 12 provinces in the Mekong Delta region, the screening rate for newborns exceeds 70%.
According to the Population Department, promoting the development of prenatal screening and congenital disease screening in children helps to detect and treat high-risk cases early, contributing to minimizing birth defects and improving the quality of the population.
At the same time, early diagnosis of congenital diseases in children allows for timely treatment and ensures healthy development for the child.
