This was shared by Dr. Hoang Van Dung, Head of the Orthopedics Department at Thai Nguyen Central Hospital, at a scientific conference on the topic "Restoring Natural Joint Function in Surgery" on December 13th. The conference was organized by Thai Nguyen Central Hospital in collaboration with the Vietnam Association of Arthroscopy and Joint Replacement.
Speaking at the conference, Mr. Nguyen Cong Hoang, Director of Thai Nguyen Central Hospital, said that 20 years ago, Vietnamese patients who wanted joint replacement surgery had to spend a lot of money to go to Germany or other countries. But in the last few years, the field of arthroscopic surgery and joint replacement in our country has truly developed.
"About four years ago, the hospital successfully performed shoulder replacement surgery on a 92-year-old man. Just two days later, he was able to move well and recovered quickly. From a small hospital, the team of doctors has continuously improved their skills and transferred technology."
Since 2021, Thai Nguyen Central Hospital has become the 6th hospital nationwide to be ranked as a special-grade hospital. "The hospital plays a specialized and tertiary role for the northern mountainous region, including in the field of joint replacement," Mr. Hoang shared.
Accordingly, joint replacement encompasses various types such as hip, knee, shoulder, elbow, ankle, and small joint replacements, in the form of total or partial replacement depending on the extent of the damage.
Dr. Tang Ha Nam Anh, President of the Vietnam Association of Arthroscopy and Joint Replacement, also stated that the field of joint replacement in Vietnam is still in its infancy compared to the medical sectors of countries in the region such as Thailand and Singapore, or compared to the rest of the world.
However, this field has recently experienced remarkable growth. This stems from several reasons, but the most important is the immense benefit that endoscopic and joint replacement techniques bring to the public.
"We are witnessing strong development in the fields of endoscopy and osteoarthroplasty, especially the application of robotic technology and software... to perform better surgical procedures," said Dr. Nam Anh.
According to Dr. Hoang Van Dung, the number of patients requiring joint replacement surgery is currently increasing significantly. The main reasons are improper exercise techniques and musculoskeletal diseases among the elderly.
"The age of people needing joint replacements is getting younger, especially men, and those who frequently use stimulants like alcohol and beer. In addition, there are those who exercise improperly, and a small number due to bone necrosis or joint diseases..."
"At Thai Nguyen Central Hospital alone, the orthopedic trauma department performs joint replacement surgery on approximately 600 patients each year," Dr. Dung shared.
According to him, in the last 5 years, joint replacement surgery techniques have made significant progress in terms of materials, joint design, etc.
Modern technological advancements in joint replacement surgery have gradually entered the medical field. In particular, Vietnam has been using 3D printing technology to assist in cases of bone fractures, bone loss, or cyst replacement.
