This information was shared by experts at the conference "Restoring Natural Joint Function in Surgery," held on December 13th and organized by Thai Nguyen Central Hospital in collaboration with the Vietnam Association of Arthroscopy and Joint Replacement.
According to Associate Professor Dr. Nguyen Cong Hoang, Director of Thai Nguyen Central Hospital, 20 years ago, Vietnamese patients who wanted joint replacement surgery had to spend a lot of money to go to Germany or other countries. However, in recent years, the field of arthroscopic surgery and joint replacement in our country has truly developed.

He recounted that about four years ago, the hospital successfully performed shoulder replacement surgery on a 92-year-old man. Just two days later, the old man was able to move well and recovered quickly.
Sharing the same view, Dr. Tang Ha Nam Anh, President of the Vietnam Association of Arthroscopy and Joint Replacement, added that the field of joint replacement in Vietnam is still in its infancy compared to the medical sectors of countries in the region such as Thailand and Singapore, or compared to the rest of the world.
However, this field has recently experienced remarkable growth. This stems from several reasons, but the most important is the immense benefit that endoscopic and joint replacement techniques bring to the public.
"We are witnessing strong development in the fields of endoscopy and osteoarthroplasty, especially the application of robotic technology and software... to perform better surgical procedures," said Dr. Nam Anh.
According to Dr. Hoang Van Dung, Head of the Orthopedics Department at Thai Nguyen Central Hospital, the number of patients requiring joint replacement surgery is currently increasing significantly. The main reasons are improper exercise techniques and, in the elderly, musculoskeletal diseases.

The age of people requiring joint replacement is getting younger, especially men, those who frequently use stimulants like alcohol or beer, or who exercise improperly; a small number are due to bone necrosis or other joint diseases.
At Thai Nguyen Central Hospital alone, the Orthopedics and Traumatology Department performs joint replacement surgery on approximately 600 patients each year.
Dr. Dung stated that in the last five years, joint replacement surgery techniques have made significant progress in terms of materials and joint design. Modern technological advancements in joint replacement surgery have gradually entered the medical field. In particular, Vietnam has been using 3D printing technology to assist in cases of bone fractures, bone loss, or cyst replacement.
"Vietnamese doctors are now completely confident in performing joint replacements on patients in difficult locations and even in complex cases," Dr. Dung affirmed.
