A pillar for the trauma and orthopedic sector in the Mekong Delta region.
In recent years, Can Tho Central General Hospital has emerged as a shining example of healthcare in the Mekong Delta region thanks to its well-planned investment strategy in training, technology transfer, and the development of key specialized fields.
Besides complex techniques such as kidney transplantation, with 14 successful cases performed, the hospital is preparing to implement liver transplantation in the near future.

A significant milestone is that the Can Tho Central General Hospital has just been assigned by the Ministry of Health to be the beneficiary of the Can Tho Central Orthopedic and Trauma Hospital, a 3-hectare facility with an investment of 950 billion VND and modern equipment worth approximately 180 billion VND. It is expected that in the first quarter of 2026, after the equipment bidding process is completed, the hospital will be put into operation, adding another world-class orthopedic and trauma treatment center right in the Mekong Delta.
According to Dr. Pham Thanh Phong, Deputy Director of Professional Affairs at Can Tho Central General Hospital, when operational, this specialized hospital will help alleviate the burden on the current Orthopedic Trauma Center, while developing into a comprehensive, specialized treatment facility with superior strengths in orthopedic trauma and rehabilitation. People in the Mekong Delta will have access to advanced techniques without having to be referred to Ho Chi Minh City as before.
International cooperation, mastering many advanced technologies.
According to Dr. Huynh Thong Em, Director of the Orthopedic Trauma Center at Can Tho Central General Hospital, 100% of the center's doctors currently hold postgraduate degrees.
The center has collaborated closely with Professor Vo Van Thanh, a leading expert in spinal surgery, to train personnel and send doctors for advanced training in Japan, South Korea, and Taiwan (China). This provides a foundation for surgeons to access international techniques and apply them effectively in diagnosis and treatment.
Over the years, the Orthopedic Trauma Center of Can Tho Central General Hospital, in collaboration with the Ho Chi Minh City Spine Society, has organized numerous international conferences, creating an environment for in-depth professional exchange between domestic doctors and international experts, contributing to raising the level of orthopedic trauma specialty in the Mekong Delta.
In addition to continuing education, the center has provided specialized training to over 50 doctors from provincial hospitals and specialized medical centers in the fields of trauma microsurgery, joint replacement surgery, and bone fixation surgery. Many techniques have been successfully transferred to local hospitals, helping to improve the diagnostic and examination capabilities at the lower levels.
With strong growth in specialized activities and a large proportion of high-tech procedures, the Orthopedic Trauma Center currently receives 150-180 inpatients and approximately 100 outpatients per day. The number of surgeries fluctuates between 20-25 cases per day, sometimes reaching up to 30 cases.
These include advanced techniques such as: Cervical and lumbar spine surgery; Hip, knee, and shoulder replacement; Arthroscopic knee ligament reconstruction; Shoulder arthroscopy; Sprain and sports injury surgery; Microsurgery for reconstructive and resuscitation of severed limbs…
Notably, many complex surgeries, such as joint replacement for bone cancer patients, which previously almost always required referral to central hospitals, are now routinely performed at the hospital, helping patients preserve limbs instead of having them amputated.
Can Tho Central General Hospital continues to invest heavily in its Orthopedic Trauma Center with a new generation C-arm system, microsurgical microscopes, arthroscopy systems, minimally invasive endoscopic surgery equipment, and modern diagnostic tools such as CT scanners and 3.0 Tesla MRI.
This comprehensive investment has facilitated the deployment of many advanced treatment techniques that were previously unavailable in the Mekong Delta. After 5 years of establishment, building upon its foundation as a Trauma Surgery department, the center has developed a system of specialized departments: Spinal and Trauma Surgery; Joint Replacement Surgery - Orthopedic Oncology; Arthroscopy and Ankle-Foot Surgery.
Alongside professional development, the center also focuses on scientific research, international cooperation, and organizing specialized conferences to update on new treatment trends worldwide. The goal is to become a national-level orthopedic trauma center.
According to Dr. Duong Khai, Head of the Department of Joint Replacement Surgery and Orthopedic Oncology, the hospital is focusing on developing advanced techniques, especially spinal surgery, minimally invasive endoscopic surgery, advanced joint replacement, and microsurgery. These will be key areas of expertise when the Can Tho Central Orthopedic and Trauma Hospital becomes operational.
With comprehensive preparation in terms of human resources, equipment, and training experience, as well as technology transfer from domestic and international experts, Can Tho Central General Hospital is a leading orthopedic and trauma center in the Western region, providing high-quality medical services right in the Mekong Delta, helping people receive timely treatment, reducing costs, and easing the burden on higher-level hospitals.
