This year, according to regulations, the 20 students with the highest scores in the city-level excellent student competition will participate in the national-level excellent student competition team for each subject. Students who received honorable mentions will not be included in the team to ensure quality. Therefore, Hanoi will have 247 students participating in the national-level excellent student competition in the 2025-2026 school year. Two subjects will not have 20 students per team: Russian (19 students) and Japanese (8 students). Among them, Hanoi - Amsterdam High School for the Gifted has the highest number of students participating in the national-level excellent student competition this year with 140 students; followed by Nguyen Hue High School for the Gifted (49 students) and Chu Van An High School (36 students).

Among them, the 10th-grade students selected for the Hanoi team to participate in the national excellent student selection exam include: Nguyen Dang Khanh (10G0 class of Newton Secondary and High School; Mathematics); Vu Quang Dung (10th-grade Math 1 class of Hanoi - Amsterdam High School for Gifted Students; Mathematics); Pham Hong Luong (10th-grade Japanese class of Hanoi - Amsterdam High School for Gifted Students; Japanese).

Hanoi's high school student excellence competition, held at the end of September, is the largest in the country. This year, for the first time, the city organized the competition in two categories, A and B, to encourage and motivate students from non-specialized high schools, as well as to ensure fairness in testing and evaluation. Therefore, the number of contestants increased by approximately 500 compared to last year. The number of award winners also increased by about 200. However, the selection of the national student excellence competition team will be based on contestants from category B.

According to regulations from the Ministry of Education and Training , Hanoi is allowed to send a maximum of 20 students per team to participate in this competition.
