6 Foods to Avoid When You Have Arthritis

People with arthritis should avoid foods containing saturated fat, added sugar, and high purines because they can trigger inflammation and cause joint pain.

Some fats

According to the Arthritis Foundation of America, people with arthritis should limit the following types of fats to avoid increasing inflammation in the body:

Omega-6 fatty acids: Some oils, such as sunflower oil, and vegetables contain high levels of these acids.

Saturated fat : Meat, butter, and cheese contain this type of fat. Saturated fat should make up less than 10% of a person's total daily calorie intake.

Trans fats : These fats can be harmful because they lower “good” cholesterol, raise “bad” cholesterol, and increase inflammation. Processed foods often contain trans fats, so people should check the nutrition facts panel when consuming them.

Road

A 2020 study found that people who regularly drink sugary soft drinks are at higher risk of developing rheumatoid arthritis (RA). Consuming these drinks can also lead to obesity, inflammation, and other chronic diseases.

Many processed foods contain added sugar. Always check food labels on breakfast cereals, sauces and soft drinks as these products can contain large amounts of added sugar.

Salty foods

Too much salt can increase your risk of developing or worsening symptoms of autoimmune diseases like RA. High salt intake also raises blood pressure and increases your risk of other chronic diseases like heart and kidney disease, heart failure, and stroke.

People should consume less than 2,300 mg of salt per day (about one teaspoon of salt).

Foods high in purines

People with gout are advised to consume less purine in combination with medication to treat the disease. Purine is available in some foods, when consumed by the body it will be converted into uric acid. High uric acid accumulation in the blood will cause acute gout.

According to the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), the following foods are high in purines: organ meats, beer, processed meats such as ham, bacon, some seafood (clams and scallops, etc.). However, a 2018 review determined that some purine-rich vegetables, such as cauliflower, mushrooms, and beans, were not associated with gout risk.

Red meat

Diets high in red meat and dairy may worsen RA symptoms. Some studies have even linked red meat consumption to earlier onset of the disease. Conversely, a plant-based diet may reduce arthritis symptoms.

Refined carbohydrates

Refined carbohydrates include added sugars and grains that have undergone processing, removing fiber and nutrients, such as white bread and baked goods.

Diets high in refined carbohydrates can increase inflammation, increase insulin resistance, and are associated with a higher risk of obesity. Both are risk factors for arthritis. Studies show that low-carbohydrate diets can reduce pain symptoms in people with knee osteoarthritis.

Experts recommend that people with arthritis should have a suitable diet to reduce inflammation in the body, improve tissue and joint health, and maintain a moderate weight to avoid increasing pressure on the joints.

One recommended anti-inflammatory diet is the Mediterranean diet, which focuses on foods such as olive oil, whole grains, fruits and vegetables, lean meats, eggs and fish, dairy products in moderation, and limited sugar, alcohol and red meat.
