The high blood pressure warning feature was introduced at Apple's event in September, and was officially launched in Vietnam on December 2.
High blood pressure affects about 1.3 billion adults worldwide. Most cases go undetected because the condition has few obvious symptoms. Many people do not get regular check-ups. Even when they do, a one-time measurement can easily be missed.
According to Apple, the new feature uses an optical heart rate sensor to monitor the response of blood vessels to each beat. The system works automatically in the background. Data is collected continuously for 30 days. When it detects a recurring abnormality, the watch will send a warning to the user.
Apple also explained that the machine learning algorithm was trained on data from more than 100,000 participants in various studies. The performance was then verified in clinical trials with more than 2,000 people.
The company also warns that the feature can't guarantee detection in all cases, but thanks to the popularity of the Apple Watch, the watch's high blood pressure warning could also alert more than 1 million people with undiagnosed high blood pressure in the first year.
When the alert is issued, users should follow the steps outlined by the American Heart Association. They should record their blood pressure readings for seven consecutive days. The readings should be taken using a third-party blood pressure monitor. The results should be shared with their doctor at their next visit.
This feature is available on Apple Watch Series 9 and later and Apple Watch Ultra 2 and later. This feature is not intended for users under 22 years of age. It is also not intended for people with diagnosed high blood pressure or pregnant women.
