Dairy cows at three farms in California, the top milk-producing state in the US, have tested positive for H5N1 avian influenza, according to the California Department of Agriculture .
This is the 14th state affected by the avian flu outbreak in dairy cows in the US. According to federal data, 13 farm workers and more than 190 herds have been infected nationwide since March.
No human cases of H5N1 have been confirmed in California, according to the California Department of Food and Agriculture. The infected dairy cows, located in the state’s Central Valley, began showing symptoms on Aug. 25. The virus’s spread from poultry to cows has raised concerns that it could adapt to spread between people.
