Protecting geographical indications for Nam O fish sauce: Another "step" to elevate the brand

The reputation of Nam O fish sauce has been affirmed by many people. As the years have passed, the taste of Nam O fish sauce has always followed the standard of rich saltiness. A drop of Nam O fish sauce brings the quintessence of the art of making fish sauce with its own unique flavor. Now, geographical indications are like a "ladder" to elevate the product brand, promote the reputation of the craft village, and at the same time "guide" consumers to the place name "Nam O", protect the craft village products from counterfeit goods and bring the national soul and national essence of Vietnamese cuisine to the world .

According to the Nam Ô Traditional Fish Sauce Village Association, the association currently has 72 members, including 3 cooperatives, 10 medium-sized fish sauce processing facilities, and 17 facilities with registered trademarks; the remaining households work seasonally. In 2019, the Nam Ô traditional fish sauce making profession was honored to be recognized by the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism as a National Intangible Cultural Heritage.

In 2024, the Department of Intellectual Property - Ministry of Science and Technology will issue a certificate of geographical indication for Nam O fish sauce products of the city. Recently, the People's Committee of Lien Chieu district issued detailed regulations to manage and protect the geographical indication "Nam O". This is an official milestone to recognize the unique value and quality of Nam O fish sauce, helping customers know and trust this fish sauce brand more and more.

Mr. Tran Ngoc Vinh, Chairman of the Nam O Traditional Fish Sauce Village Association, expressed that after many ups and downs, geographical indications for fish sauce products will "open the door" for the city's products to affirm their brand, reach out to the world, and create an attraction for cultural and tourism development. "Nam O people are famous for "taking care of fish sauce like taking care of their children", the attention to each stage shows the love and respect for the gift of fish and salt from the sea. Nam O rin fish sauce has a salty taste with a long lasting sweet aftertaste. From here, the need to affirm the origin of goods and improve the lives of people in craft villages is greater to protect honest business people, not let individuals take advantage of the community brand and increase the value of products commensurate with the potential", Mr. Vinh expressed.

In recent years, investment in advertising, trade promotion, and development of the Nam O fish sauce brand has been effectively invested; more than 5,000 domestic and foreign tourists have come to visit and learn about the local fish sauce production model. Along with that, business activities are increasingly developing, production scale is increasingly invested and expanded; output increases year by year, and the market is increasingly expanding both domestically and internationally.

Mr. Bui Thanh Phu, Director of Huong Lang Co Fish Sauce Company Limited, Member of Nam O Traditional Fish Sauce Village Association, shared that through detailed regulations to manage and protect the geographical indication "Nam O" according to the instructions issued by Lien Chieu District People's Committee, it will help people feel secure in doing their job in a more stable and sustainable way. "Fishermen of Nam O village "eat fish sauce" and "sleep fish sauce", most of them produce on a small scale, scattered throughout the village with little separation from the living space.

Like a human life, Nam O fish sauce also has many ups and downs. The fish sauce industry once stagnated when the firecracker industry flourished, people moved to do projects and were affected by industrial fish sauce. Many fishermen sold earthenware jars and boats, quit the sea, young people were less interested in the profession, causing a shortage of successors. In fact, geographical indications, with the affirmation of origin and quality of goods by distinguishing signs, have created an added value of 30-50% for the product. Individuals as well as businesses like us will strictly comply with detailed regulations to manage and protect the "Nam O" geographical indication issued by the People's Committee of Lien Chieu district," Mr. Phu affirmed.

According to the Department of Science and Technology, up to now, the investigation and survey have been completed to assess the current status of production and business; the level of consumer trust; and the history and reputation of Nam O fish sauce products have been determined; the natural geographical characteristics of the production area have been studied; a map of the current status of the production area has been built; a map of the climate characteristics (temperature, rainfall, day-night temperature range, number of sunshine hours, radiation...) of the production area has been built; a map of the geographical area corresponding to the geographical indication of "Nam O" fish sauce in Da Nang city has been built at a scale of 1/10,000.
