Da Nang: Open university specializing in pickleball training

Pickleball, the sport that is 'causing a fever' globally, has officially entered university lecture halls in Da Nang.

On October 26th, in an interview with Thanh Nien newspaper, Dr. Duong Manh Thang, Vice Rector of Da Nang University of Physical Education and Sports , stated that in the 2025-2026 academic year, the university will open several new majors, including pickleball, marking the first time a university in the country has offered comprehensive training in this sport.

Pickleball is gaining popularity among young people, becoming a new subject in university curricula.

According to Dr. Thang, in 2025, the school will be recognized by the Center for Education Quality Assessment (University of Danang) as meeting the standards for training program assessment.

“After reviewing and adjusting, we decided to open a pickleball specialization to meet the growing societal demand. This is a rapidly developing sport, especially among young people,” said Dr. Duong Manh Thang.

According to the Vice Rector of Da Nang University of Physical Education and Sports, pickleball is a sport that combines elements of table tennis, badminton, and tennis, suitable for all ages. The current teaching staff of the university have all received international training and certification in pickleball, ensuring the quality of instruction.

Dr. Duong Manh Thang further explained that pickleball is a specialization within the field of sports training.

"Upon completion of the program, students will be awarded a Bachelor of Sports Coaching degree, with the diploma appendix clearly stating their specialization in pickleball, reflecting the training orientation and specific skills that students will be equipped with," Mr. Thang said.

According to the Vice Rector of Da Nang University of Physical Education and Sports, the first training course currently has nearly 20 students enrolled. The program focuses on techniques, tactics, coaching methods, competition organization, and sports event management, aiming to develop the community and professional pickleball movement in Vietnam.

Previously, in March 2025, the Da Nang Pickleball Federation was established. The city's education and sports sector also launched a movement to practice and compete in pickleball in schools and agencies, spreading a new and modern sporting spirit to the community.
