On December 11th, the 33rd SEA Games officially commenced with a vibrant atmosphere at many venues in Bangkok. According to the schedule of the Vietnam Olympic Committee, nine sports held their finals today. The Vietnamese sports delegation participated in 26 events and was expected to significantly increase its medal count after only winning 4 gold medals on the opening day.
Athletics, dubbed the "queen" of the SEA Games, officially kicked off with many notable athletes. All attention was focused on the 1,500m race, where Luong Duc Phuoc and Sam Van Doi competed in the men's event, while Bui Thi Ngan and Nguyen Khanh Linh were the strong hopes in the women's. These athletes are all in good form and determined to win medals, thereby boosting Vietnam's athletics goal of 12 gold medals at this year's Games.
In swimming, the athletes entered the second day of competition with two of their strongest events: the men's 100m breaststroke (led by Pham Thanh Bao) and the men's 4x200m freestyle relay, events in which Vietnam holds the SEA Games gold medal. In addition, the participation of Trinh Truong Vinh, Luong Jeremie Loic Nino, Nguyen Kha Nhi, Vo Thi My Tien, and Nguyen Ngoc Tuyet Han in the 7 finals opens up even more opportunities to reach the top of the podium.
Equally captivating, jujitsu continues to be a key strength of the Vietnamese Sports Delegation, with eight events reaching the finals. Experienced athletes such as Dang Dinh Tung, Pham Tri Dung, Pham Le Hoang Linh, and Pham Thi Thu Ha all aim for gold medals.
Judo, karate, and taekwondo also competed on the day, with taekwondo placing its hopes on Nguyen Thi Mai (women's 46kg) and Nguyen Hong Trong (men's 54kg), while karate placed great faith in the women's team poomsae event, a strength that has brought success to Vietnam at previous SEA Games.
Gymnastics today features four finals, notably the appearance of three "golden faces": Hai Khang in the floor exercise, Xuan Thien in the pommel horse, and Khanh Phong in the rings. These are events where Vietnamese gymnastics has a very clear chance of winning medals.
Alongside the key sports, many other Vietnamese teams such as 3x3 basketball, badminton, petanque, baseball, chess, kayak, and canoeing… also continue to compete in qualifying rounds and finals, opening up opportunities to expand their medal tally.
At the end of the first day of competition, the Vietnamese sports delegation had won 4 gold medals, 4 silver medals, and 16 bronze medals, temporarily ranking fourth overall. With a series of strong events holding finals on December 11th, expectations for a strong surge are entirely justified, promising an explosive day of competition for Vietnamese sports at the 33rd SEA Games.
