During a meeting of the sports delegations participating in the 33rd SEA Games, held at the end of the day on December 10th, the first day of competition, a series of dissatisfied reports were sent to the host country, Thailand.
Mr. Thana Chaiyaprasit, head of the Thai delegation, stated that he had received feedback from the Vietnamese sports delegation regarding the improper display of the national flag during the gold medal ceremony. For example, at Island Hall, where the taekwondo competition took place, the Vietnamese flag was displayed upside down. Following numerous errors related to incorrect flag printing in the competition schedule, and the display of a map of Vietnam omitting Phu Quoc and the Truong Sa and Hoang Sa archipelagos, the Vietnamese delegation emphasized that they do not want this issue to recur.
Representatives from the Malaysian delegation complained that the host country had promised to provide only halal (Islamic) food, but the portions were insufficient for daily needs. It was far too little.
Regarding transportation, buses carrying athletes from Suvarnabhumi Airport to their accommodations still have to wait 2 to 3 hours. Furthermore, concerning lodging, representatives from many countries complained about errors and confusion related to room allocation at hotels in Chiang Mai.
Dr. Meechai Inwood, Deputy Governor of the Sports Authority of Thailand (SAT), acknowledged all the issues and promised to address them promptly. Mr. Thana also affirmed that SAT, as the chairman of the organizing committee and the venue provider, would appoint a responsible person to closely monitor the situation, preventing a recurrence of mistakes that could negatively impact the tournament and the host country's image.
