The 33rd SEA Games marked the first time that Mixed Martial Arts (MMA) was included as an official competition, with six categories for both men and women, following two formats: traditional MMA and modern MMA.
With the undefeated Nguyen Tran Duy Nhat, this is great news for MMA, providing an opportunity to promote and develop MMA, while also offering a high-level platform for Vietnamese MMA fighters to showcase their skills.
"The best thing is that Vietnamese MMA fighters get to represent Vietnam, step into the ring, wear the national flag, fight with pride, and bring glory to the homeland," Nguyen Tran Duy Nhat shared with a reporter from Tien Phong newspaper at the MMA arena of the SEA Games 33 at MMC Hall.

Having participated in numerous SEA Games and achieved considerable success in Muay Thai, Nguyen Tran Duy Nhat has been involved as a coach in the two most recent Games. In 2023, under Coach Nguyen Tran Duy Nhat's leadership, the Vietnamese Khmer Kun team won 5 gold medals at the 32nd SEA Games in Cambodia. This year, he is coaching his student Le Ngoc Thu in the women's traditional MMA 54kg category.
Watching from the stands, Nguyen Tran Duy Nhat commented that the inclusion of MMA in the competition program has led many professional fighters to switch to it, resulting in a very high level of professional quality.
"We participated with 6 fighters and 3 reached the finals, creating many exciting and emotional performances. This shows the skill level of Vietnamese MMA fighters, establishing our position among the top teams in Southeast Asia."
"I hope MMA will become an official and regular sport at the SEA Games, allowing fighters to prepare more thoroughly and select outstanding individuals to achieve even better results. At this SEA Games, the Vietnamese sports delegation is investing heavily in young athletes, and I believe we have many new potential talents to take Vietnamese MMA further, making the national flag fly high on the international stage," affirmed the undefeated fighter who once held a gold medal at the 31st SEA Games.
