School violence: A matter of serious concern.

According to expert analysis, school violence is divided into three main forms: physical violence, psychological violence, and material violence. Physical and material violence are easily recognizable and are promptly addressed by teachers, parents, and society as a whole. However, acts of psychological violence are very difficult to detect if the student does not dare to speak up.

During the 2021-2022 school year, under the guidance of teacher Nguyen Thi Phuong Thao from Trung Vuong Secondary School, a group of two students conducted a scientific research project on "Psychological Violence in Schools" right at the school.

The survey results were surprising: the most common forms of bullying students endure are being given derogatory nicknames. This is followed by discrimination based on appearance and family background; criticism and blame; and discrimination based on poor academic performance and cognitive abilities.

In addition, behaviors that cause significant psychological pressure on students include posting embarrassing images or insulting comments on social media or school confession pages; being isolated and having no friends; and receiving threatening or abusive messages.

Through conversations with middle and high school students in the province, we found that many students are currently experiencing bullying but are afraid to speak up for fear of being isolated.

School bullying, which may seem harmless or just a joke, actually has serious consequences for many students.

Student NTL, a student at a junior high school in Phan Dinh Phung ward, said: "In my class, there's usually a close-knit group of friends. When the group leader dislikes someone in the class, the whole group joins in. I'm one of the students who's been ostracized by a group in this way. Sometimes I want to confide in my homeroom teacher, but I'm afraid that if that group finds out, they'll encourage other students in the class to stop being friends with me."

Strengthening the organization of group activities helps students change their perceptions and live more positively.

NPN, a student from Group 7, Phan Dinh Phung Ward, recounted: "I got a high score in History, so I took a picture to show it off on Facebook, and some classmates started badmouthing me on Confessions. When I reacted, they called some older students to threaten to beat me up. The incident ended there, but the group of friends then encouraged other classmates to stop associating with me. Every day I go to school feeling discouraged, and I've asked my mother to let me transfer schools, but my family doesn't agree."

To prevent physical violence and bullying, schools need to strengthen awareness campaigns to encourage students to speak up when they are bullied, and to protect their peers when they witness them being beaten by their classmates, schoolmates, or outside groups.

Students need to learn to speak kindly, and not share or condone violent behavior. They should be brave enough to report wrongdoing to their teachers, parents, or other adults. If every student chooses to stand up for what is right, school violence and bullying will not exist, and every day at school will be a joyful one for them.
