70 years ago, on March 13, 1954, our troops fired the first shots to start the Dien Bien Phu campaign, attacking the strongest stronghold of the French colonialists. After 56 days and nights of “digging mountains, sleeping in tunnels, in the pouring rain, eating rice balls, and blood mixed with mud” (poem by To Huu), the heroic Vietnamese troops overcame rains of bombs and bullets and planted the Determined to Fight, Determined to Win flag given by Uncle Ho on the roof of De Castries’ bunker.
During 56 days and nights, our army and people wiped out more than 16,000 enemy troops, destroying the stronghold that the West considered an “impregnable fortress”. This was also the first time in history that such a large expeditionary force of a Western empire had been destroyed in a colony.
