On February 5, Hanoi City Police announced that they had just arrested 7 suspects for protection rackets and property extortion at Long Bien market, Hanoi.
According to investigation documents from the statements of 28 victims who were small traders and drivers transporting goods to Long Bien market area, they had to contact the group of subjects and pay money to ask for seats to sell goods.

A group of people encroached on Hong Ha Street, Phuc Xa Ward, Ba Dinh District, Hanoi, next to Long Bien Market, creating an area right outside the market gate. The group established a separate area and provided protection there.
The vendors are forced to accept the arrangement and pay the money as required by the group of people to be allowed to sell. If they do not pay, they will not be allowed to sell and will be kicked out of the market.
According to the Criminal Police Department, Hanoi City Police, on average each day the group collects from 10-30 million VND, each month from 400-500 million VND, equivalent to about 5-6 billion VND per year.
