(NLĐO) - Mai Xuan Huu from Quang Binh , the owner of the YouTube channel "ATGT-QB," impersonated a "journalist" and repeatedly extorted money from businesses.
The trial of Mai Xuan Huu
On December 19th, the Quang Binh Provincial People's Court opened a trial to hear the case against defendant Mai Xuan Huu (born in 1984, residing in Nhan Trach commune, Bo Trach district) for the crime of "Extortion."
According to the indictment, Mai Xuan Huu is the owner of the YouTube channel "ATGT-QB," specializing in traffic safety in Quang Binh province. Between December 2023 and February 2024, Huu discovered several businesses in Quang Trach district transporting oversized and overloaded materials. Huu took photos and videos of these vehicles.
Subsequently, the defendant sent the recorded images via the Zalo application and messaged the businesses, threatening to upload them to YouTube or provide them to the authorities. To avoid the disclosure of images exposing their wrongdoings, the businesses were forced to pay Huu.

During the process, Mai Xuan Huu repeatedly threatened the business to extort over 100 million VND, of which 30 million VND was not successfully extorted.
Furthermore, Mai Xuan Huu falsely claimed to be the "Deputy Director of the Institute of Science, Training and Cultural Development" under the Vietnam Association for Human Resource and Talent Development, but lacked official proof. On numerous occasions, Huu impersonated a "journalist" to harass and extort money from businesses.
In court, defendant Mai Xuan Huu sincerely confessed to his crime. The panel of judges sentenced him to 18 months in prison.
It is known that Mai Xuan Huu also had a previous conviction for theft in 2004, for which he was sentenced by the Dong Hoi City People's Court to 12 months of suspended imprisonment.
