Taking cues from Trump's new approach, Iran sets conditions for nuclear talks

According to the New York Times, tech billionaire Elon Musk, a close ally of US President-elect Donald Trump, met with Iran's ambassador to the United Nations, Amir Saeid Iravani, in an effort to ease tensions between Iran and the US.

The newspaper, citing anonymous Iranian sources, described the meeting between the world's richest man and Ambassador Amir Saeid Iravani as "positive." The two met for over an hour at a secret location on November 11.

If confirmed, the meeting could offer an early indication that Trump is serious about diplomatic engagement with Iran and is not opting for a tougher approach to appease many conservative members of the Republican Party as well as ally Israel.

On the other hand, this move would also once again demonstrate the extraordinary influence of billionaire Musk, owner of Tesla and X, who is almost always present alongside Trump and is believed to have participated in the US President-elect's phone calls with world leaders.

During his first term as president, Trump scrapped an agreement on Iran's nuclear program negotiated under his predecessor Barack Obama and instead pursued a policy of "maximum pressure," including efforts to force other countries not to buy Iranian oil.

However, during the recent election campaign, Trump spoke out to leave the door open for a diplomatic solution, although he still publicly supported Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, who ordered a military attack on Iran alongside Israel's conflict with the Hamas movement.

On the same day, Iranian Foreign Minister Seyed Abbas Araghchi announced that his country is ready for nuclear negotiations if other parties are serious about this issue.

According to a statement from the Iranian Foreign Ministry, Mr. Araghchi made this statement after meeting with the Director General of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), Rafael Grossi, who was visiting Tehran, Iran.

The Iranian Foreign Minister stated: "Because we are certain of the peaceful nature of our nuclear program, we have no problem cooperating with this agency and can continue these cooperative activities. However, for that purpose, other parties should also fulfill their obligations and responsibilities."
