Seminar "Reducing emissions, purifying air" on August 22 organized by Thanh Nien Newspaper
At the seminar "Reducing emissions, purifying the air" on August 22, Dr. Hoang Duong Tung, Chairman of the Vietnam Clean Air Network, said: Traffic is the number one source of emissions in large cities. Ho Chi Minh City alone has about 9 million motorbikes and 1 million cars, while Hanoi has more than 7 million motorbikes and 800,000 cars. The number of old vehicles emitting PM2.5 fine dust is increasing, making the "pollution season" seem to have become the city's fifth season.
"Clean air does not come by itself, but must come from drastic actions every day," said Dr. Hoang Duong Tung.
Not only roads, aviation is also facing pressure to reduce emissions in the context of the global move towards the goal of net zero emissions by 2050. The sharing of Mr. To Viet Thang, Permanent Deputy General Director of Vietjet at the seminar provided a clearer perspective on the green flight journey of Vietjet and the entire Vietnamese aviation industry.
Mr. To Viet Thang shared: Sustainable development is always Vietjet's top priority. Vietjet has published an ESG report and synchronously implemented many solutions such as: carbon offset mechanism through credits, afforestation, renewable energy investment; optimizing mining technology, periodic engine cleaning, applying AI in mining operations to optimize costs and fuel. Thanks to that, each passenger on a Vietjet flight reduces an average of 38% of emissions compared to the old aircraft model.
"According to statistics, each seat flying 1km emits 50 grams of CO2. Vietjet's fleet is modern and optimized in its operations. Pilots must fly in a way that minimizes emissions, flight planners must plan the shortest flights, the most efficient flight methods, make the aircraft the lightest, and regularly wash the engines... In recent years, the company has also used environmentally friendly items on the aircraft. Therefore, passengers who want to reduce their carbon footprint should choose Vietjet to have the smallest footprint," Mr. Thang shared.
Vietjet is also a pioneer in researching and using sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) – which can reduce CO₂ emissions by up to 80%.
Mr. To Viet Thang, Permanent Deputy General Director of Vietjet
In 2024, Vietjet successfully carried out the first flights refilling SAF in Vietnam and flying to Australia and South Korea. In August, the airline signed a cooperation agreement to consume SAF blended in Vietnam to put SAF into use on its regular flights, a new step in the journey of producing and consuming SAF in Vietnam.
The green commitments and sustainable development that the aviation industry in general and Vietjet in particular are contributing to promote green transformation activities are the driving force for the entire economy to transform. When businesses dare to pioneer technology, invest sustainably and the community joins hands, environmental challenges will turn into development opportunities for the country in the new era of development.
Mr. Nguyen Dong Phong, Director of the Road Vehicle Emission Testing Center (Vietnam Register - Ministry of Construction) said that current environmental polluting emissions include on-site emissions, emissions from production and business, and emissions related to greenhouse gases. Of which, greenhouse gases are a global problem, while on-site emissions are the story of each individual. The leader of the Register affirmed that the process of switching to clean, green, zero-emission fuels still faces many difficulties and obstacles.
"The world has changed, we are behind and must take advantage and narrow the gap. This process certainly has trade-offs, only do it if it is more beneficial. In my opinion, in the short term it is difficult, but in the long term the benefits will be much greater. When the economy grows, the country develops, and income increases, health issues and a clean, green, and beautiful environment need to be focused on. At the present time, green transformation is a "golden" opportunity. The longer we discuss it, the more time is lost and opportunities are lost," Mr. Nguyen Dong Phong emphasized.
