Previously, a 73-year-old female patient named PTC from Ngu Hanh Son ward was admitted to the hospital with severe coughing and shortness of breath. Imaging results revealed a tumor in the trachea measuring 18x20x24mm, invading the right isthmus and lobe of the thyroid gland.
The patient was diagnosed with a rare form of primary tracheal cancer, for which there is currently no universally accepted treatment protocol.
The hospital's expert council held a multidisciplinary consultation and unanimously agreed to perform the surgery. The operation faced many challenges due to the short trachea, the nearly 3cm tumor causing severe tracheal stenosis during anesthesia, and the high risk of anastomotic leakage.
After 3 hours, the surgical team successfully removed a 5cm section of the trachea. The patient recovered well, with no complications observed.
According to Dr. Dang Nguyen Kha, Head of the General Oncology Department and lead surgeon, world medical literature reports indicate that the maximum tracheal length that can be resected is only about 5-6cm in tall patients. This is not only the first case of primary tracheal cancer treated at the hospital, but also the longest tracheal resection performed on a patient who is only 1.43m tall.
Dr. Kha advises that patients with persistent respiratory symptoms that do not improve with conventional treatment should consult a specialist for screening and early detection of this condition.
