Patient LTL (72 years old, from Tra Lien commune) came to the Pacific Tien Phuoc Hospital on the morning of the same day with symptoms including: nosebleeds from the left nostril, discomfort in the nasal and facial areas, and continuous insomnia for 3 weeks.
During a nasal endoscopy, doctors from the Ear, Nose, and Throat Department of the hospital discovered a live leech in the left nasal cavity, approximately 6cm long, completely blocking the middle and upper nasal passages. The leech was removed intact during the endoscopy. Following the intervention, the patient's condition stabilized and they were discharged the same day.
According to doctors at the Ear, Nose, and Throat Department of Pacific Tien Phuoc Hospital, blood-sucking wounds on the skin caused by leeches are usually painless but can cause prolonged bleeding, leading to life-threatening situations, especially when they enter sensitive cavities such as the nose, trachea, and digestive tract.
Doctors advise people to be cautious in their daily lives, especially those who go into the forest, to limit drinking water from streams and springs to avoid leeches entering the body. People living in humid mountainous areas, or returning from such areas, should seek timely medical attention at the nearest health facility if they experience nosebleeds, nasal congestion, or a persistent cough.
