Despite being heavily disciplined, Hoang Anh Gia Lai Club still beat Hai Phong at Pleiku Stadium to move one step further in the relegation race.

On the evening of April 27, Hoang Anh Gia Lai Club hosted Hai Phong at Pleiku Stadium in round 20 of V-League 2024-2025.

The home team was without technical director Vu Tien Thanh and team leader Nguyen Tan Anh in the technical area. They were suspended by the Vietnam Football Federation (VFF) disciplinary committee for their reaction to the referee after losing 0-1 to Hong Linh Ha Tinh at Pleiku Stadium in round 19.

In the 13th minute, VAR made Hoang Anh Gia Lai Club gasp after Huu Son's shot bounced off defender Jairo Filho's hand in the penalty area.

After a few minutes of reviewing VAR and discussing with the VAR room, FIFA referee Hoang Ngoc Ha determined that there was no penalty for Hai Phong Club.

After this situation, Hoang Anh Gia Lai Club had 3 chances to score. However, first captain Minh Vuong had a bad shot, then goalkeeper Nguyen Van Toan played excellently.

Specifically, Minh Vuong shot wide in the 24th minute after a well-coordinated performance by Hoang Anh Gia Lai players. Goalkeeper Van Toan blocked Brandao's close-range shot (minute 35) and Le Van Son's long-range shot (minute 37).

Meanwhile, Hai Phong Club only had one dangerous chance in the 45+1 minute. However, Trieu Viet Hung could not beat goalkeeper Trung Kien in the face-off.

The second half did not have many dangerous attacks from both teams. In such a boring match, Hoang Anh Gia Lai Club unexpectedly scored a goal in the 85th minute.

Substitute midfielder Hoang Minh rushed down the field and shot diagonally, but failed to beat goalkeeper Van Toan. However, the ball bounced right to Brandao, allowing the Brazilian striker to easily tap the ball into the empty net, opening the score for the home team.

Hai Phong Club had a chance to tie the score 1-1 in the 90+5 minute, but Nhat Minh, unmarked, kicked the ball into the sky after a favorable pass from Friday.

With an important victory at home, Hoang Anh Gia Lai Club jumped two places to 8th place with 24 points, pushing Hai Phong down to 9th place despite having the same 24 points.
