Turn Disadvantages into Motivation

In life, there are people who were born with a damaged body and had to face many difficulties, but with extraordinary determination, they overcame their fate, turning their disability into motivation to realize their dreams. They are the ones who inspire, light up hope and affirm that, no matter what barriers they face, with faith and will, all limits can be broken to reach success.

In Phuoc Thanh commune, Tay Ninh province, there is a small family that is always filled with laughter and happiness. That is the home of Nguyen Minh Chien (39 years old) and Nguyen Thi Bich (37 years old), a disabled couple who have risen up with their own hands, determination and love.

Small family is always full of strength, love and sympathy

Since childhood, both Chien and Bich were affected by polio, which left them unable to walk normally. However, instead of giving up to fate, they chose to overcome adversity with all their will and determination.

Ms. Bich chose to become a tailor to start her career. She recalls the early days of learning to sew, operating a sewing machine with her damaged legs was a big challenge but she did not give up.

Little by little, she conquered the sewing machine with her own damaged legs. Luckily, she was supported with free vocational training by an acquaintance, which was also the motivation for her to try harder.

After a year of apprenticeship, although she had mastered sewing skills, she still did not have enough conditions to open her own shop. It was not until she met Mr. Chien and started a family that a new opportunity opened up.

Her husband’s parents gave her an old sewing machine, a gift filled with love, faith and hope. It was also her first startup machine, a precious asset that she always treasured.

Mr. Chien recalled: "When I was young, I was often teased by my friends, so I was very self-conscious and had an inferiority complex. Since then, I have withdrawn, lived a closed life and never thought about getting married. Then one day I met Bich, who had the same situation, we easily shared, accompanied each other in life and then became husband and wife."

20 years have passed, after many hardships, the life of Mr. Chien and his wife has "borne sweet fruit" with 2 healthy and obedient children. Nguyen Ngoc Han is in grade 11 and has been an excellent student for many years. Nguyen Ngoc Tho is in grade 7, diligent and filial.

Joining the Disabled People's Club of Hiep Thanh Commune, Go Dau District (old), Ms. Bich was fortunate to receive start-up capital support of 60 million VND from the Provincial Association for the Protection of Disabled People and Protection of Children's Rights, along with a non-refundable grant from the Disability and Development Center (DRD). From that capital, she set up a small tailor shop in front of her house. With a sewing machine, an overlock machine, and additional capital to buy fabric, her shop gradually operated stably. People in the surrounding area trusted her and came to order tailoring.

During the summer vacation, the couple's two daughters also helped their mother, one sewing and the other assembling clothes. Although they are young, they understand the family's situation and are always diligent and obedient. Her husband's parents are old and their health is declining, so in addition to sewing, she also spends time taking care of them.

Mr. Nguyen Minh Chien adjusts the amplifier to deliver to the customer.

Mr. Chien travels around every day on a 3-wheeled vehicle to sell lottery tickets. Every day, he earns from 100,000 to 200,000 VND.

In addition, with diligence and learning ability, he also learned to assemble karaoke amplifiers to sell to local people.

His products are highly appreciated for their quality, reasonable price, and dedicated warranty, so many people order them for use in their homes or restaurant businesses.

In 2022, at the 4th "Happiness of Disabled Couples" exchange program with the theme "Crescent Moon Happiness" held in Hanoi , Mr. Chien and Ms. Bich were honored as outstanding disabled people. They received certificates of merit from the Vietnam Association for the Protection of Disabled and Orphans, the Central Committee of the Vietnam Women's Union and many gifts from central ministries and branches.

This is not only a well-deserved recognition but also a great source of pride for the family and the locality.

Ms. Bich shared: "When I heard that my husband and I were able to attend the exchange program "Happiness of disabled couples" in Hanoi, I was very happy because I had never been far from my hometown and met new friends in the same situation. On that trip, I learned many things, especially the will to overcome the unfortunate circumstances."

The life of that small family is made up of love, will, determination and sharing. The story of Mr. Chien and Ms. Bich has given strength and determination to the disabled to have more confidence in life./.
