'Blue Beetle' holds No. 1 spot at North American box office last weekend

At the international box office, Blue Beetle , starring Xolo Maridueña as Blue Beetle, grossed $18 million from 63 markets. With $43 million worldwide, it's one of the "best" starts in DC Cinematic Universe history.

Blue Beetle cost more than $100 million to produce and millions more to market. It is the third DC film to hit theaters in 2023, following Shazam: Fury of the Gods ($30.1 million in March 2023) and The Flash ($55 million in June 2023).

Blue Beetle focuses on Jaime Reyes, a college graduate who is chosen to become the superhero known as Blue Beetle. The fourth DC adaptation, Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom, was scheduled for release in December 2023 before the studio's new directors James Gunn and Peter Safran took the comic book universe in a completely new direction.

Directed by Angel Manuel Soto, Blue Beetle also features the following cast: Bruna Marquezine, George Lopez, Adriana Barraza..., and is currently showing in theaters in Vietnam.

After back-to-back weekends in first place, Barbie landed in second place with $21.5 million from 4,003 theaters in North America.

Oppenheimer took third place with $11 million in its fifth weekend, pushing its North American ticket sales to $286 million. The film about the father of the atomic bomb crossed the $700 million mark at the global box office over the weekend, surpassing 2014's Interstellar ($714 million) to become Christopher Nolan's fourth-highest-grossing film. It's the fourth-biggest global release of the year, behind The Super Mario Bros. Movie ($1.35 billion), Barbie ($1.27 billion) and Guardians of The Galaxy Vol. 3 ($845 million).

Paramount's Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Mutant Mayhem landed in fourth place with $8.4 million from 3,477 theaters in North America. The animated comedy grossed about $118 million worldwide while costing $70 million to produce.

Universal's comedy Strays also stumbled in its debut, earning just $8.3 million from 3,223 theaters to finish in fifth place. The $46 million film struggled overseas, earning $1.9 million from 21 territories for a global total of just over $10 million.
