North Korean Defense Ministry warns after news of US submarine arriving in South Korea

North Korea's Defense Ministry accused the United States on February 11 of once again posing a serious security threat by sending a nuclear submarine to South Korea, according to Reuters.

A North Korean Defense Ministry spokesman said in a statement that the appearance of a U.S. nuclear-powered submarine on the Korean Peninsula shows that the U.S. is always too aggressive in its confrontations with North Korea.

"We express deep concern over the dangerous hostile military actions of the United States, which could escalate the intense military confrontation in the region surrounding the Korean Peninsula into a full-blown armed conflict," the KCNA news agency quoted the statement as saying.

According to a statement from the North Korean Ministry of Defense, the country's armed forces will "not hesitate to exercise their legitimate right to punish provocateurs."

The U.S. attack submarine USS Alexandria docked in Busan, South Korea, for resupply and crew rest, according to South Korean media reports on February 10, citing sources from the South Korean Navy. The South Korean Ministry of Defense did not immediately respond to requests for confirmation or comment on this information.

According to the US Navy, the USS Alexandria submarine of the country's Pacific Fleet is equipped with Tomahawk cruise missiles.

North Korea frequently criticizes the presence of American weapons and joint US-South Korea military exercises. On February 9, North Korea warned of "unintended consequences" when it criticized a series of exercises between the US and its allies.

North Korea has issued numerous tough statements since Donald Trump took office as US president on January 20, even though Trump has revealed that he will reach out to North Korean leader Kim Jong-un for direct talks, according to Reuters.
