The match at the Etihad Stadium on the night of September 14 saw Phil Foden open the scoring with a header, before Erling Haaland scored twice in the second half to sink the Red Devils' hopes. Fernandes admitted his team were not at their best, especially after falling behind to Man City.

Speaking to Sky Sports, the Portuguese midfielder highlighted two aspects that urgently need to be addressed: “It’s not difficult to find positive points, but that’s not enough to win. What we did today wasn’t enough to get a result and that’s what we’ll learn from this game.”
Fernandes pointed out that Man Utd have two weaknesses that need to be improved urgently, which are the ability to score goals and defend. He said: "We keep creating chances but cannot score as many goals as we want. We need to control the ball better. We conceded three goals that could have been avoided."
The Portuguese star also called for more daring in attack: “When we attack, we have to take more risks and be braver in the back. When we pass the ball to the centre-backs, they play three against three and put a lot of pressure. The space left is very small.”
Defeat to Man City marked Man Utd's worst start to a Premier League campaign since 1992-93, when they took just four points from their opening four games. Fernandes admitted it was a "very bad" result but tried to find the bright spots.
“The goals could have been avoided. When we had the ball, we were very positive, very brave, we moved the ball forward. When we created chances, we could have been more coherent. We wanted what Man City got and that was three points. Man City were very smart to score the goals they did, they have a very good team and good players,” Fernandes concluded.
