Snakehead fish is a key aquatic species in Hau Giang province, possessing high economic value and good resilience to environmental conditions.
Therefore, many households in the commune have taken advantage of the available conditions to raise this fish species. A typical example is the commercial farming model of spotted snakehead fish by Mr. Nguyen Van Chac's household in Hamlet 10, Vi Trung commune (Vi Thuy district, Hau Giang province), which has brought a relatively high income to the family and contributed to the household's economic development.
The Nguyen Van Chac household is one of the earliest to replicate the model of commercial snakehead fish farming in Vi Trung commune, Vi Thuy district, Hau Giang province.
It is known that he has nearly 6 years of experience in commercially raising spotted snakehead fish. Initially, he faced many difficulties regarding techniques, breeding stock, and disease management.
However, after a period of research, learning, exchanging experiences, and receiving technical advice from technical officials at the commune and district levels, he has now been able to independently source seeds and feed, and effectively manage diseases.
With a pond surface area of 1,500m2, Mr. Chac raised 70,000 juvenile spotted snakehead fish in combination with 10,000 striped catfish.

After 9 months of raising, the total weight of the spotted snakehead fish reached over 10,000 kg. The spotted snakehead fish were purchased by traders at a price of 65,000 VND/kg. After deducting expenses, Mr. Chac still made a profit of over 150 million VND.
After nearly 6 years of working with the spotted snakehead fish farming model, Mr. Chac said, "To raise spotted snakehead fish effectively and increase profits, first of all, farmers need to choose healthy, uniformly sized fingerlings from reputable fish breeding facilities, and the fingerlings must be quarantined."
To increase efficiency, during the process of raising this specialty fish, he also regularly supplements the fish feed with vitamin C, digestive enzymes, and multivitamins.
In particular, regular preventive measures against common fish diseases such as parasitic diseases and hemorrhagic diseases are necessary. In addition, farmers must maintain good pond hygiene and keep the water environment and pH levels within appropriate ranges.
"Every day when feeding the fish, you must check the amount of food to adjust accordingly, avoiding overfeeding. Excess food can dirty and pollute the pond water, creating favorable conditions for disease outbreaks..."
In addition to his accumulated experience over the years, Mr. Chac regularly visits and attends training courses and workshops on snakehead fish farming organized by various sectors to learn new techniques. Thanks to his thorough understanding of the processes and techniques for caring for spotted snakehead fish in ponds, his fish farming seasons have consistently yielded high results.
The model of commercially raising spotted snakehead fish in ponds is currently yielding high economic efficiency, creating conditions for farmers in the commune to develop their household economies sustainably and contributing to the construction of new rural areas in the locality.
