On November 10, a representative of Children's Hospital 2 (HCMC) said that doctors performed brain surgery on a 12-month-old baby.
The patient is a boy named LHC (residing in Ho Chi Minh City). According to the mother, after birth, the baby showed signs of a gradually deformed head. After the family took the baby to the hospital, the doctors examined the baby and diagnosed him with craniosynostosis.
The patient was transferred to the Department of Neurosurgery, Children's Hospital 2 for plastic surgery. Nearly two weeks after the major surgery, the family was happy to see that the boy's head was more balanced than before.

According to Dr. Nguyen Thanh Do, director of the Department of Neurosurgery, craniosynostosis is a malformation that causes one or more cranial sutures to close prematurely, deforming the skull and limiting the brain's development space.
Some children have two coronal sutures on both sides, causing their heads to be flattened, or in the case of baby C., the midsagittal suture causes the head to be long in the front-back direction. In some situations, the frontal suture causes the head to have a triangular shape...
Because the deformed skull will hinder the space for brain development, over time the child is at risk of intellectual impairment and the shape of the head will be unbalanced, causing loss of aesthetics.
Doctor Do recommends that parents who see their child is born with an abnormal head shape should take them to the hospital for early examination to get appropriate treatment, depending on the type of craniosynostosis. When the bones are still soft, surgery will be easier, as well as increase the ability to recover.

According to statistics, up to now, the Department of Neurosurgery, Children's Hospital 2 has received and treated more than 250 cases of children with craniosynostosis. With the advancement of medicine, materials and tools are increasingly upgraded, helping doctors more conveniently increase the number of surgeries each year.
During the surgery, the doctor will separate and reshape the skull pieces, helping the child's head to be round like other normal children. In particular, this technique is also supported by health insurance, helping the patient's family receive a lot of support in the matter of hospital fees.
