DNVN - The Vietnam Institute of Applied Medicine warns that vitamin D deficiency in children in Vietnam remains common and negatively impacts their height development. A 2022 study in Southeast Asian countries (including Vietnam) showed that more than 50% of infants are deficient in vitamin D.
In her opening remarks at the scientific conference "The Role of Vitamin D3 and K2 in Improving Bone Density and Height Growth in Children" on the morning of November 6th, Associate Professor, Dr. Nguyen Thi Xuyen - former Deputy Minister of Health , President of the Southeast Asian Medical Association, and President of the Vietnam Medical Association - highly appreciated the contributions of the Vietnam Institute of Applied Medicine in the field of research and application of health and nutrition for Vietnamese people, especially children's nutrition.
The Vietnam Institute of Applied Medicine is deeply interested in health, nutrition, scientific evidence, and the latest and most applicable recommendations for optimal height development in children.
Notably, Ms. Xuyen emphasized that the Vietnam Institute of Applied Medicine warns that vitamin D deficiency in children in Vietnam remains common and negatively impacts their height development. A 2022 study in Southeast Asian countries (including Vietnam) showed that more than 50% of infants are deficient in vitamin D.
Vitamins D3 and K2 play an important role in improving bone density and promoting height growth in children.
To improve bone health and height growth in children, Dr. Truong Hong Son, Director of the Vietnam Institute of Applied Medicine, suggests that the combination of vitamin K2 and vitamin D3 supports calcium absorption into the bones, thereby increasing bone density and reducing the risk of osteoporosis and fractures. Simultaneously, it reduces calcium deposition in blood vessels and soft tissues.
"Several studies have shown that supplementing with a combination of vitamin D3 and vitamin K2 has a better effect on bone development in children compared to supplementing with vitamin D3 alone," Mr. Son said.
Speaking at the conference, Professor Leon Schurgers, Vice President of Biochemistry at Maastricht University and Chairman of the global scientific steering committee on quality assurance for vitamin K detection, stated that to maximize the effectiveness of vitamin K2, it is important to choose products containing vitamin K2 in the MK7 form. Trans MK7 is particularly recommended because it has better bioavailability in the body and is of higher purity with fewer impurities.
Experts and nutritionists attending the workshop agreed on new, practical perspectives on the important role of Vitamin D2 and Vitamin D3 in ensuring strong bones and supporting optimal height development in children. Specifically, Vitamin D3 helps increase the absorption of calcium and phosphorus from the small intestine, providing the raw materials for bone mineralization, thus helping young children's bones develop strong and healthy.
Ensure you get enough vitamin D3 and vitamin K2 through your diet to maintain healthy bones.
Vitamin K2 plays a crucial role in maintaining and developing bone health in infants and young children. It helps activate the protein Osteocalcin to enhance bone mineralization, ensuring strong and properly developing bones. Vitamin K2 also helps prevent calcium from depositing in the wrong places, such as arteries, reducing the risk of vascular calcification.
In addition, supplementing vitamin K2 through diet or supplements can help children grow taller and strengthen bone health, especially when combined with vitamin D3 to optimize calcium absorption and utilization in the body.
Participants in the workshop recommended that adequate supplementation of vitamin D3 and vitamin K2 through diet or supplements is essential for maintaining healthy bones. Simultaneously, further research is needed to explore the role of combining vitamin D3 and vitamin K2 for at-risk populations such as children, the elderly, and pregnant women.
