TPO – Quang Yen Commune (Thanh Ba District, Phu Tho ) is a rare place with lush green palm forests typical of the Northern midlands, preserving the traditional craft of making products from palm trees.

Palm trees are associated with the midland of Phu Tho, and have been featured in many poems and songs that are familiar to many generations. Over time, palm trees have gradually disappeared, partly due to urbanization and partly because this type of tree does not have high economic value.

However, in Quang Yen commune (Thanh Ba district, Phu Tho), palm forests and green palm hills still exist, making this place known as the palm land of the Northern midlands.

About 30 years ago, palm trees were common throughout the midland of Phu Tho. Later, palm trees gradually thinned out due to changes in land use structure.

Although it is a very beautiful tree, the palm tree does not have a high economic value. The tree has no woody trunk, only branches and leaves can be used for some purposes such as making brooms, making blinds, roofing...

Walking on the village roads in Quang Yen, it is easy to see the scene of drying palm branches (leaf stalks). Many households in Quang Yen still maintain the profession of making palm products such as palm brooms, palm blinds, roofing materials, etc.

Making palm products is a traditional craft. However, most of the steps have now been mechanized. In the photo, a Quang Yen resident is making palm blinds on an automatic machine system.

According to Quang Yen people, palm-making has been around since the time of our ancestors. This job is not hard, but the profit is low, only "taking labor as profit" to have extra income to serve life.
