TPO – Quang Yen commune (Thanh Ba district, Phu Tho province) is one of the rare places that still has lush green palm forests, a distinctive feature of the northern midland region, and preserves the traditional craft of making products from palm trees.

Palm trees are closely associated with the midland region of Phu Tho province, and have been featured in many familiar works of poetry and literature for generations. Over time, however, palm trees have gradually disappeared, partly due to urbanization and partly because this type of tree does not yield high economic value.

However, in Quang Yen commune (Thanh Ba district, Phu Tho province), lush green palm forests and hills still exist, making this place known as the palm land of the northern midland region.

Quang Yen remains a predominantly agricultural area, with gentle people and peaceful scenery. In the photo, a Quang Yen farmer is carrying rice in a field during harvest season, with the distinctive shape of palm trees easily recognizable from afar in the background.

Nang Yen Temple, the spiritual center of Quang Yen, is located next to what is considered the most beautiful palm forest in the area.

About 30 years ago, palm trees were common throughout the midland region of Phu Tho province. Later, palm trees gradually became scarcer due to shifts in land use.

Despite its beauty, the palm tree does not have high economic value. It has no woody trunk; only its branches and leaves can be used for a few purposes such as making brooms, blinds, and roofing.

From an aerial perspective, the palm forest looks very beautiful.

Walking along the village roads in Quang Yen, you can easily spot palm branches (leaf stalks) drying in the sun. Many households in Quang Yen still maintain the craft of making products from palm trees such as palm brooms, palm mats, and roofing materials.

Making palm products is a traditional craft. However, nowadays, most of the processes have been mechanized. In the photo, a resident of Quang Yen is making palm mats on an automated machine system.

According to the people of Quang Yen, the craft of palm leaf making dates back to their ancestors' time. The work isn't strenuous, but the profit margin is low; it's just enough to cover the labor costs and supplement one's income.

Besides being used for blinds, palm leaves are also used to make brooms – a familiar item widely used everywhere.
