According to Mr. Mai Khac Trung Truc, Director of the Saigon Zoo Animal Enterprise, from August 2025, Saigon Zoo recorded a case of successful breeding of crowned cranes from four African cranes.
The eggs hatched after 5 weeks, in mid-September 2025. The three baby cranes are now tall and able to feed themselves. Currently, the crowned cranes are being cared for in the isolation area of the zoo.
Crowned cranes are omnivorous birds, reaching a height of about 1 meter and weighing 3.5 kg when fully grown. They typically breed during the rainy season in wetlands, laying about four eggs per clutch.
The crowned cranes at Saigon Zoo are part of a plan to conserve and develop this invasive species. Here, they are fed seeds, vegetables, and insects. The crane enclosure restricts visitors, and the zoo also assigns a veterinarian to provide regular care.
Saigon Zoo is also home to many other rare animals such as flamingos and white pheasants. The flamingo garden is also a favorite attraction for many visitors to Saigon Zoo. Baby flamingos, with their red-orange color, toddle around drinking water and searching for food, attract the attention of many visitors.
Zoo staff also actively monitor, care for, and feed the animals daily, and maintain a clean and beautiful environment for visitors.
Some time ago, Saigon Zoo received a flock of six red-crowned cranes brought from Thailand for care. This was a noteworthy event, as the successful care of this rare animal has given the zoo more experience to care for other species.
The red-crowned cranes were then handed over to Tram Chim National Park to be transported back to Dong Thap province .
In the coming period, this location will continue to receive new groups as part of a cooperation program between the People's Committee of Dong Thap province and the Zoological Park Organization of Thailand, the Vietnam Zoo Association, the International Crane Foundation, and Saigon Zoo Company Limited.
