According to Mr. Mai Khac Trung Truc - Director of Saigon Zoo and Botanical Garden Animal Enterprise, since August 2025, Saigon Zoo and Botanical Garden has recorded a case of crowned cranes successfully reproducing from 4 cranes of African origin.
The eggs hatched after 5 weeks, in mid-September 2025, the 3 cranes are now tall and can feed themselves. The cranes are currently being raised in the Zoo's quarantine area.
Crowned cranes are omnivorous birds, about 1 meter tall and 3.5 kg in weight when fully grown. Cranes usually breed during the rainy season, in wetlands, laying a clutch of about 4 eggs.
The crowned cranes at Saigon Zoo and Botanical Gardens are part of a plan to preserve and develop exotic animals. Here, they are fed seeds, vegetables and insects. The crane garden limits visitors, and the unit also mobilizes a veterinarian to participate in regular technical care.
Saigon Zoo is also home to many other rare animals such as flamingos and white pheasants. The flamingo garden is also a favorite tourist destination for many people when they come to Saigon Zoo. The baby flamingos are orange-red, drinking water and looking for food, attracting the attention of many visitors.
Zoo staff also actively monitor, care for, and feed animals every day, and improve the landscape to be clean and beautiful to serve visitors.
Some time ago, Saigon Zoo and Botanical Garden received a flock of 6 red-crowned cranes brought from Thailand for care. This was a remarkable event, with the successful care of this rare animal, the Zoo has gained more experience to care for many other species.
The above red-crowned cranes were then handed over to Tram Chim National Park to be brought to Dong Thap .
In the coming time, this location will continue to receive new batches within the cooperation program between Dong Thap Provincial People's Committee and the Thai Zoological Park Organization, Vietnam Zoo Association, International Crane Association and Saigon Zoo and Botanical Garden Company Limited.
