Sesko's injury makes MU rethink Zirkzee

Joshua Zirkzee will likely have to stay at Old Trafford, not because of form, but because of circumstances.

Manchester United are facing a headache in the striker position. Ruben Amorim started the 2-2 draw with Tottenham by leaving Sesko on the bench, giving Matheus Cunha a chance to start. But when he came on in the second half, Sesko played only 30 minutes before collapsing, clutching his knee in pain.

The Slovenian striker's injury comes at a time when United were considering loaning Joshua Zirkzee out. Now everything is on hold. Amorim fears he could lose Sesko for weeks, which would further weaken an already thin attack.

Zirkzee was on the bench against Spurs but did not get on the pitch, as Amorim had used up all five of his substitutions. The Dutch striker has played just 82 minutes in the Premier League this season, a shortfall for a talent who was once expected to explode at Old Trafford.

According to transfer expert Graeme Bailey, United have received several loan offers for Zirkzee from European clubs. A loan deal in January was almost completed. But now, his future depends entirely on Sesko's condition.

Zirkzee understands the situation. He knows he will only leave if Amorim has enough strikers at their disposal. Sesko is injured, and Cunha is not a natural striker. Therefore, Zirkzee will probably be kept on to ensure squad depth.

Amorim still believes in a flexible pressing style, but he needs at least two real strikers to rotate. If Sesko is out for a long time, Zirkzee could go from “extra” to a must-have solution.

At a time when the schedule is so tight, MU cannot afford to risk having only one striker left. Therefore, instead of finding a new destination, Joshua Zirkzee will most likely have to stay at Old Trafford, not because of his performance, but because of his circumstances.
