Yen Bai - A young man called on the community to buy honey to have funds to take his parents from Yen Bai to Ho Chi Minh City (HCMC) to receive his university diploma with him, which moved many people.

Khang A Tua (29 years old), living in Che Cu Nha commune, Mu Cang Chai district, Yen Bai , wrote on his personal page about his desire to bring his parents to Ho Chi Minh City to attend his university graduation ceremony.

In the article, Tua called on everyone to support and help him realize his dream by buying traditional Mong costumes left by his grandmother or buying Mu Cang Chai honey. All the money from the sale will be used to cover the travel, accommodation, and food expenses for Tua's parents to travel from Yen Bai to Ho Chi Minh City.

The post reads: "I've always thought that although the bachelor's degree has my name on it, the journey to get it belongs to the whole family, especially my parents.

It was my father who installed monkey bridges on the terraced fields for me to go to school, and then encouraged me to continue my university studies even though I was "very old". My mother is still the same, always silently sacrificing, sometimes when the rooster crows, she is still awake working and when the sky is not yet bright, she has to get up to go to work...".

After 2 days of posting, the touching story about gratitude to parents has touched the hearts of many people. The number of people buying honey exceeded Tua's expectations and the dream of taking his parents to Ho Chi Minh City to receive a university degree has come true for the Mong boy.

Meeting Tua's family on June 23 at Fulbright University Vietnam, Mr. Khang Cho De (Tua's father) could not help but be moved and shared: "I am very happy to see my children graduate. My family works hard in farming, so I always try to let my children study, not having to work hard from morning to evening in the fields like their parents." He added that this was the first time he had been to Ho Chi Minh City, the city is very bustling and he really likes it.

A Tua presented his graduation thesis on the topic "Attitudes of Mong women towards domestic violence and divorce"

As for Tua, he was happy because he received enthusiastic support from everyone. "The amount of money to bring my parents from Yen Bai to Ho Chi Minh City was really not small for my family. At first I was worried, but in the end everyone helped me buy a lot of goods. Thanks to that, my parents were in Ho Chi Minh City to witness my university graduation," Tua said.

Khang A Tua is a Mong ethnic. Five years ago, Tua was one of the first 54 students selected by Fulbright University Vietnam to participate in the Co-Design Year.

In this program, Khang A Tua received the Fulbright Founding Scholarship. This scholarship fully supports tuition and living expenses in 2018 - 2019. After that, the program will grant each student $5,000 (equivalent to 115 million VND) for each remaining year.

After 5 years of studying at Fulbright University, Tua graduated with a bachelor's degree with honors in arts and humanities with a major in Vietnamese studies.

Khang A Tua's journey to school is different from everyone else's. Besides studying, Tua still has a family to take care of. He was often afraid that he would not be able to complete his studies because of financial worries. "While studying in Ho Chi Minh City, I had to worry about whether people back home had food to eat, how the crops were, how my family's livelihood was... I'm so happy that everything was finally completed," Tua shared.

Dr. Nguyen Nam, Director of the Center for Vietnamese Studies at Fulbright University Vietnam, who is Tua's thesis advisor, commented: "After 5 years, Tua is still a young man who, no matter what he studies or does, always relies on his ethnic background. Tua's interdisciplinary approach and critical thinking help others gain new insights into the Mong community. Now we can call Tua a future Vietnamese researcher, an interdisciplinary researcher of Mong society, or a social activist."

As for Tua, he still hopes that after graduating from university, he will be able to help his homeland, supporting Mong women to have more livelihoods, jobs, and financial independence. "I really want my homeland to be better, children, whether girls or boys, male or female, will be treated more fairly," Tua expressed.
