A commercial passenger flight operated by Air China diverted safely to Shanghai on Saturday (October 18) after a battery stored in a passenger's carry-on luggage caught fire on board, the airline said.
The incident occurred on a routine flight of the national airline from Hangzhou city, eastern China to Incheon international airport, South Korea.

"A lithium battery spontaneously caught fire in a passenger's carry-on luggage stored in the overhead compartment on flight CA139," the airline said on Chinese social media platform Weibo. The crew immediately handled the situation according to procedures and no one was injured.
The plane was diverted to make an unscheduled landing at Shanghai Pudong International Airport "to ensure flight safety," the airline added.
Footage filmed and posted by passengers shows flames erupting from the overhead luggage compartment. Several passengers tried to put out the fire.

Data from flight tracking website Flightradar24 shows the flight took off from Hangzhou at 9:47 a.m. local time.
The plane made a complete U-turn over the sea, about equidistant from China's east coast and Japan's southern island of Kyushu, and landed in Shanghai shortly after 11 a.m. local time.
Most airlines around the world prohibit passengers from checking luggage but allow unused carry-on luggage.
