Parents were scammed out of more than $51,000 by letting their children participate in a fake fashion event.

It is estimated that dozens of parents have fallen victim to a scam perpetrated by a Shanghai-based fashion company. The company has defrauded dozens of parents of more than 367,000 yuan (over 1.3 billion VND).

According to Chinese media, the company promoted a series of events called "Paris Children's Fashion Week" during the summer vacation period for schoolchildren.

This company even built a website with a lot of fake content to gain the trust of parents.

Parents swindled over $51,000 by enrolling their child in a fake fashion event.

Currently, there are many forms of fraud that exploit parents' desire to help their children improve their academic records (Illustrative image: SCMP).

At these shows, the organization consistently uses the names and logos of world- renowned luxury fashion brands. Parents who want their children to participate in these "high-end designer" fashion shows must pay an initial fee of up to 6,000 yuan (approximately 22 million VND).

The incident only came to light after a world-renowned fashion brand with a branch in China filed a complaint with authorities in Shanghai.

The complaint alleges that their brand logo was used illegally, and their name was altered to resemble the original in order to deceive parents.

This company also used counterfeit clothing designs and demanded that parents pay more than 10,000 yuan (over 36 million VND) for each outfit that their children wore during the show.

Authorities determined that the company's actions violated trademark rights and declared that all the money collected from parents was illegal profit. The business was fined 600,000 yuan.

This scam preys on parents' desire to provide their children with more experiences and enhance their children's profiles with impressive information about extracurricular activities they have participated in.

On Chinese social media, many netizens have reported an increasing number of scams targeting parents who want to help their children improve their academic records.

For example, many arts and sports centers charge substantial fees when parents register their children to participate in children's competitions.

In return, the students will certainly have medals and awards to bring home to enhance their resumes, making the application process for high-quality schools more favorable.
