Attending the opening ceremony were President of the Inter- Parliamentary Union (IPU) Tulia Ackson, IPU Secretary General Martin Chungong and Heads of Parliamentary Delegations of 115 IPU member countries, including 102 Speakers of Parliament and 33 Vice Speakers of Parliament.
A high-ranking delegation of the Vietnamese National Assembly led by National Assembly Chairman Tran Thanh Man attended the conference.

The conference has the theme “A World in Turmoil: Parliamentary Cooperation and Multilateralism for Peace, Justice and Prosperity for All”.
This topic is considered very appropriate and urgent in the context of the world witnessing many profound and complex changes. From geopolitical conflicts, climate change, to non-traditional security challenges and increasing development gaps - all require more comprehensive and effective cooperation between countries.

The theme of the conference emphasizes the role of national parliaments in promoting multilateralism, dialogue and cooperation to build a world of peace, justice and prosperity for all people - the common aspiration of the people of the world. This is also the vision and commitment that Vietnam has been persistently pursuing, with the motto of "proactive, positive and responsible" in all foreign affairs activities, especially parliamentary diplomacy.
Immediately after the welcoming ceremony, the 6th World Conference of Speakers of Parliament will officially open.

National Assembly Chairman Tran Thanh Man's attendance at the conference demonstrates Vietnam's strong commitment to multilateralism; at the same time, it enhances the image and position of Vietnam and the Vietnamese National Assembly in the international arena; continues to affirm Vietnam's proactive, active and responsible role in multilateral forums, and the substantial contributions of Vietnam and the Vietnamese National Assembly to the activities of the United Nations and the IPU.

The conference has a comprehensive agenda with many important discussions. In addition to the plenary session on the general theme, there are also 5 group discussions on issues that are attracting great attention from the international community such as: promoting the participation of women and youth in parliament, innovation to respond to global changes, the role of parliaments in shaping the digital future, protecting and promoting the rights of vulnerable people, and international cooperation to achieve the sustainable development goals by 2030.

In her opening remarks, IPU President Tulia Ackson emphasized the importance of the conference's theme and upcoming discussions in the context of the world facing many serious challenges such as armed conflicts, political instability, violations of international law, decline in multilateral commitments and resources for sustainable development, ensuring social justice, and supporting vulnerable groups.
IPU President Tulia Ackson called on member parliaments to support the IPU's coordinating role in promoting peace, democracy, development, the rule of law, ensuring social justice, accelerating hunger eradication and poverty reduction, narrowing the development gap between groups of countries and regions, and effectively handling global challenges such as climate change and artificial intelligence governance.

IPU Secretary General Martin Chungong said that the IPU and its member parliaments need to "turn words into action", put statements and resolutions adopted at multilateral parliamentary forums into practice, develop and monitor the implementation of national and regional laws and policies, and ensure the rights of all population groups.
The IPU Secretary General stressed that parliamentary diplomacy is the key to promoting peace and international cooperation through dialogue and trust building; at the same time, he called for strengthening gender equality in parliament, fighting against discrimination and gender-based violence, affirming that gender equality and women's empowerment will contribute to promoting sustainable development.

Speaker of the Swiss House of Representatives Maja Riniker, in her role as host, expressed special thanks and appreciation for the participation of a large number of Speakers of Parliaments around the world, thereby demonstrating the importance of the highest-level multilateral parliamentary conference, as well as support for multilateralism right in Geneva - the capital of multilateral diplomacy.
The President of the Swiss House of Representatives emphasized the significance of the United Nations Charter and the principles of trust, fairness, and international solidarity for a world of peace, harmony, and development, for all people.
Director-General of the United Nations Office in Geneva Tatiana Valovaya said that the world is facing many unprecedented crises and the international multilateral system is under the greatest pressure since the United Nations was founded in 1945, forcing the United Nations to strongly reform.

The Director-General of the United Nations Office at Geneva called on parliaments to continue supporting multilateral cooperation with the central coordinating role of the United Nations and the Inter-Parliamentary Union to prevent and resolve conflicts, maintain peace, mobilize commitments and resources to implement the Sustainable Development Goals, and move towards a fair and equitable global order.
The 6th World Conference of Speakers of Parliament took place from July 29-31.
According to the conference program, National Assembly Chairman Tran Thanh Man will give a speech at the General Discussion Session of the Conference.
