Chairman of An Giang Provincial People's Committee listened to a report on the work of building special policies for Phu Quoc special economic zone.

Alternate member of the Party Central Committee, Deputy Secretary of the Provincial Party Committee, Chairman of the An Giang Provincial People's Committee Ho Van Mung delivered a speech directing the meeting.

Speaking at the meeting, Chairman of An Giang Provincial People's Committee Ho Van Mung directed the Department of Finance to work with the consulting unit to review, discuss and agree on specific policies for Phu Quoc special economic zone, trying to complete before October 20, ensuring progress in submitting to competent authorities.

Regarding the Phu Quoc Master Plan for Development to 2040, with a vision to 2050, comrade Ho Van Mung said that this is a very important content, and suggested providing the entire content of the project to the consulting unit that is implementing the province's planning to coordinate and give comments and complete it. From now until the end of October, the relevant units will urgently receive comments, then the Provincial People's Committee will meet to listen to the consulting unit's report; it is expected that in the first week of November it will be completed and submitted to the competent authority for consideration.

The Chairman of the Provincial People's Committee requested the consulting unit to coordinate with the Department of Finance to review and synthesize all comments, especially those from central ministries and branches, to complete the dossier to submit to the Prime Minister .

Comrade Ho Van Mung assigned the Department of Home Affairs to preside over and develop a project on the organization of the entire political system in the three special zones, not just the government apparatus. According to the People's Committee of An Giang province, Phu Quoc's economic scale is increasing. The average economic growth rate in the period 2004 - 2024 reached over 19%/year.

The average income per capita in Phu Quoc in 2024 will reach nearly 6,000 USD, 1.5 times higher than the national average, higher than the average of Kien Giang province (before the merger), but there is an income gap between the central area and coastal island communes.

The economic structure is shifting in the right direction, rapidly increasing the proportion of trade, services, industry, and construction, and reducing the proportion of agriculture; the tourism and service industry of Phu Quoc alone currently accounts for about 70% of the production value structure of Phu Quoc and creates jobs for about 70% of the population on the island.

Regarding tourism, in the period 2011 - 2023, Phu Quoc tourism revenue grew by an average of 20-30%/year. The number of tourists to Phu Quoc has continuously increased sharply: in 2020 it reached more than 3.5 million, in 2022 it increased to 5.4 million (including 191,000 international visitors).

2024 is a breakthrough in Phu Quoc's tourism development with 5,969 million visitors (nearly 1 million international visitors), including 4 international cruises with more than 5,200 passengers. Total revenue from tourism reached VND 21,170 billion, up 43.3%, exceeding the plan by 24.5% and accounting for over 84% of the province's total tourism revenue.

In 2023, the number of enterprises in Phu Quoc increased nearly 17 times; capital increased nearly 400 times compared to 2004. Phu Quoc has 3,085 operating enterprises with registered capital of over 142,000 billion VND, accounting for about 22% of enterprises in An Giang province.
