Next season's V-League could have two teams both named Ho Chi Minh City.

Binh Duong FC has submitted a document to the Vietnam Football Federation (VFF) and the Vietnam Professional Football Joint Stock Company (VPF), requesting consideration of a proposal to change the team's name from Becamex Binh Duong to Becamex Ho Chi Minh City. If approved, the name Becamex Ho Chi Minh City FC will be used from the 2025-2026 V-League season.

In the document, Binh Duong Club stated that this proposal is based on the policies and guidelines of the Party and the State, as well as "the trust of fans in the southern region in general and Ho Chi Minh City in particular." From July 1st, the two provinces of Binh Duong and Ba Ria - Vung Tau merged into Ho Chi Minh City (resembling Ho Chi Minh City). Therefore, Binh Duong Club also wants to transform itself.

If the proposal is approved, there will be two teams named Ho Chi Minh City participating in the V-League next season. These are Becamex Ho Chi Minh City FC (formerly Becamex Binh Duong) and Ho Chi Minh City FC. Currently, there is information suggesting that Ho Chi Minh City FC will also undergo significant changes in its management and name in the near future. As for the First Division, it is currently unclear whether Ba Ria - Vung Tau FC will adopt the name Ho Chi Minh City, as the former Ba Ria - Vung Tau province has become part of Ho Chi Minh City.

Including both V-League and First Division teams, there are currently six clubs based in Ho Chi Minh City. These are Binh Duong FC, Ho Chi Minh City FC (V-League), Ba Ria - Vung Tau FC, Ho Chi Minh City Youth FC, Gia Dinh FC, and Van Hien University FC (First Division). Ho Chi Minh City has the highest number of clubs operating within Vietnam's professional football system.

The V-League and First Division maps may be changed.

It is possible that in the coming years, the football landscape in the South in particular, and Vietnamese football in general, will see changes in the names (and even the way some teams operate) due to the merger of provinces and cities.

However, even now, some provinces and cities, despite mergers, still retain their team names. This includes Nam Dinh FC (the provinces of Ha Nam, Nam Dinh, and Ninh Binh merged to form Ninh Binh, but Nam Dinh FC has not changed its name), HAGL FC and Binh Dinh FC (the provinces of Binh Dinh and Gia Lai merged to form Gia Lai, but Binh Dinh FC temporarily retains its name), and Binh Phuoc FC and Dong Nai FC (Binh Phuoc merged with Dong Nai to form Dong Nai province, but the two teams still play side-by-side in the First Division)...

Binh Duong FC finished seventh in the V-League 2024-2025 with 32 points after 26 rounds, along with a bronze medal in the National Cup. The team from Binh Duong changed coaches three times last season, including Hoang Anh Tuan, Nguyen Cong Manh, and currently Nguyen Anh Duc. Binh Duong FC has gone seven years without a trophy, since their last National Cup victory in 2018 under coach Tran Minh Chien.

Binh Duong FC may part ways with Que Ngoc Hai, Vo Hoang Minh Khoa, and others in this transfer window and prepare for a squad overhaul to revamp the team.
