Experts recommend that parents should have their genes examined and evaluated before pregnancy - Illustration photo
On the occasion of the 12th anniversary of the establishment of the Post Office Hospital IVF Center, Professor Van Khanh said that screening for gene carriers is part of the process of preparing for pregnancy and prenatal care, to identify couples at risk of transmitting the disease to their children.
"Many of us are carriers of the gene and don't know it, so healthy couples can also pass on the disease gene to their children," said Ms. Khanh.
Therefore, premarital counseling and testing, genetic screening to detect people carrying mutated genes, and risk assessment when giving birth have been implemented in many places, especially for families with assisted reproduction, this activity is implemented more.
Currently, Professor Khanh said that it is possible to screen genes to assess the risk of two groups of genetic diseases based on genetic mechanisms, including recessive genetic diseases on autosomal chromosomes and genetic diseases linked to the X sex chromosome.
Over the years, hundreds of healthy babies have been born to families carrying genes for thalassaemia, spinal muscular atrophy, Duchenne muscular dystrophy, cerebral palsy, chondrodysplasia, congenital metabolic disorders (fatty acid and uric acid metabolism disorders, etc.), congenital heart disease, congenital deafness and muteness, xeroderma pigmentosum, etc.
Among these, thalassaemia is the most common genetic disease in Vietnam with 13% of the population carrying the gene, meaning that in 10 people, at least 1 person carries the gene and the probability of 2 people carrying the gene getting married is very high. People with the disease will have to be treated with blood transfusions and iron chelation for life, affecting their physical, psychological and quality of life.
"Every pregnancy has risks, couples should have reproductive health check-ups to minimize the risk of giving birth to an abnormal child" - Professor Khanh recommends.
