Commendable efforts of Nguyen Thi That

Today (February 15) in Thailand, Nguyen Thi That and the Vietnamese cycling team will compete in the most anticipated event, the mass start with a distance of 105.7 km. Having won the Asian championship three times in 2018, 2022, 2023, Nguyen Thi That is considered a strong candidate for the gold medal in this year's tournament. Her most formidable competitor is the home racer Jutatip, who defeated Nguyen Thi That at the Tour of Thailand last year.

At this year’s Asian Championship, Nguyen Thi That encountered an obstacle when her racing car was burnt down while traveling from Bangkok to the competition venue. Her old car was brought from Vietnam in time to help her feel a bit more secure. In addition, the 31-year-old racer from An Giang also had a sore throat and had to skip training in the first days of arriving in Thailand.

The race was quite favorable for Nguyen Thi That as she and her "rival" Jutatip kept a close eye on her. The race was flat but had sharp turns that caused some racers to fall, including 2 U.23 Vietnam racers, Lam Thi Thuy Duong and Nguyen Thi Be Hong.

3km from the finish line, the Thai riders took the initiative to lead the race, acting as a tractor to support Jutatip to the finish line to sprint their forte. Nguyen Thi That chose to stay close behind Jutatip. Then she rose strongly in the final stretch and competed fiercely with her opponent. However, Vietnam's number 1 female cyclist only finished second, winning the silver medal, while Jutatip finished first, winning the gold medal.
