Overcoming adversity with music

Music and art play an important role in life. But for Dinh Viet Tuong (23 years old, from Quang Tri province), music is not just a form of entertainment or a simple passion, but a strong motivation to live, helping him overcome the barriers caused by Tourette Syndrome (TICs syndrome).

Courage to find a turning point

Dinh Viet Tuong became known to many people when he participated in the program “All-round Rookie” organized by Yeah1. The image of the small male contestant who looked simple but tense, sometimes trembling, left an impression on the viewers.

TICs syndrome is a type of movement disorder, uncontrollable body movements, causing jerking movements and strange sounds. Viet Tuong has had TICs syndrome since 7th grade, although not life-threatening, it causes many difficulties for Tuong in daily life, especially when performing activities that require high concentration.

Dinh Viet Tuong confidently performed his singing performance at the All-round Rookie program.

Appearing on the show “All-round Rookie”, during his self-introduction, Viet Tuong made the audience choke up when every few words he had to brace himself, trying to suppress unwanted sounds. But when the first notes were played, Tuong’s eyes seemed to light up, sparkling, and strong.

He put his whole life story and dream into the song Scar to your beautiful composed by Alessia Cara (Canada).

Along with his warm voice, Viet Tuong also left his mark with his silk dance performance. Through each soft, decisive movement that glides across the silk strip, people can see the determination and intense passion of the young man.

Regarding his decision to join the program, Viet Tuong shared: When I saw the first contestants, I was very shy because everyone was talented and had a bright appearance. I was even afraid that I would become a laughing stock for others. However, I thought this was a great opportunity to prove myself. Although I have not had any outstanding achievements, I believe that by coming here, I have at least conquered myself.

By boldly ignoring the fear of public opinion and social gossip, Viet Tuong's courageous decision opened up an emotional journey. From the first days of the program, Viet Tuong received the attention of other contestants. After the performance, Viet Tuong received recognition and encouragement from audiences nationwide.

Living the dream

Recently, Viet Tuong has had more opportunities to stand in front of audiences on stages he has long dreamed of. In his first performance at May Sai Gon with singer Bui Cong Nam, Viet Tuong performed a song composed by Bui Cong Nam, once again recounting his challenging and emotional journey.

Having been passionate about music since childhood, Viet Tuong never dared to think that one day he would live by singing and live for singing. From the moment he received the invitation, until he started singing, he still thought he was dreaming. Only when he received an encouraging pat on the shoulder from Bui Cong Nam and the enthusiastic applause from the audience, did Viet Tuong realize that it was all true.

“Being busy performing in many places makes me happy, proving that I have tried and constantly strived. I am grateful to those who have given me opportunities, grateful to the audience who have always looked at me with warm eyes, grateful to those in the profession who have always enthusiastically supported and recognized me. Thanks to that, I have the motivation, joy and strength to continue on this thorny path,” Viet Tuong confided.

For him, being able to sing is not only proof of a resilient youth, but also a “miracle”. The characteristic of TICs syndrome is that the more stressed the patient is, the more difficult it is to control their actions. Yet every time he sings, Viet Tuong feels very comfortable.

Although the symptoms are still there, he no longer has to strain too much. Thanks to that, he brings more perfect performances. That is also what the male singer always aims for, determined to develop himself so as not to disappoint the audience.

Looking back on the journey of more than ten years, it is hard to believe that the boy who was once afraid and hated himself, and was teased by everyone, is now living in his own success and dreams. In the future, Tuong plans to release a new song, participate in some music projects and act in movies.

The disease is no longer a barrier, but has become a unique characteristic, a reminder for Viet Tuong to strive and develop himself every day. In the end, for him, everything that happens, whether sweet or bitter, contributes to creating today's life, all are equally precious and valuable.
